For Me:
Bicycle: Local, normally trips to the horde-base or very close mines during the night.
Minibike: Local or near-local (2Km>) trips where I need to mine or maybe harvest assets like beds and/or cars.
*WORST CASE SCENARIO: The Minibike is the most fuel efficent of the lot. If you are missing gasoline use it!*
Motorcycle: The Bread-n-butter of 7dtd, use this one as often as possible; jack of all trades.
4x4: Hey you raiding a couple of tier 3-4 POIs or a Tier 5? That's the one you want to load up on inventory!
Gyrocopter: The fastest point from point A to point B is always a straight line. Gyrocopter will Be the one to do it if you're gonna be raiding a single POI or doing the Trader-restock route.
I tend to use 4x4 for most POI raiding, and keep the Motorcycle at home base. I'll drop any items worth selling to the trade into the Motorcycle. When it's nearing full, I take the motorbike to the trader and offload valuables.
Worth noting - I have an easier time driving through burnt forest city ruins areas with the Motorcycle than the 4x4. It's easier to avoid the piles of scrap metal on the Motorcycle, which will stop the 4x4 in it's tracks.
I would keep them in storage unless you play permadeath. If you die, it is nice to have a spare vehicle at the base to retrieve your body and main vehicle with.
Gas is so easy to get you're drowning in it, so once I have a motorcycle I have no need for the bicycle ever again. Even when I'm not specifically trying to get gas, I end up making 10 times as much as I can use.
I do like to use my old vehicles to shuttle myself around my day-to-day base, horde base, mine(s), garden, and the nearest trader. I try to have these all close to each other, but something’s always a little farther away.
I think it’s the gyrocopter that makes the biggest difference. I still need a good long runway to take off with that thing, and I settle for landing within the general vicinity of where I wanted to land. And “landing” frequently means bailing out when it’s still five feet above ground so that it’ll stop more quickly.
Hence the gyrocopter is great for traveling over a mountain range to get to the next town over, but it’s not worth the effort when I just want to go two blocks to the local trader (it’s two blocks away so that I could build my base on a better plot of land, closer to a confluence of mineable resources and biomes). So I take the motorcycle for that, which is as fast or even faster if I have the misfortune of clipping something with the gyrocopter’s wheel.
Also, like Teresa says, it’s nice to have another vehicle on standby, so that if your character dies far from base, you can spawn back at your bedroll and immediately drive over to your backpack - and your abandoned primary vehicle - before you lose anything.
Basically I use the motorcycle or the 4x4 for everything forever. One for slightly more speed, the other for more carrying capacity, depending on what I'm doing.
Honestly, I'd cut a nice sensible road through the mountains with a pickaxe and pave it myself before I'd even think about flying over them with the gyro.
I stand corrected - you can not sell old vehicles, any kind apparently. They all say "No Sell Value", even if fully repaired/new. I'm surprised, i thought I sold an old bike in a previous version, but maybe that was a long time ago. (?)
