And easy way to picture it, is being the same height as a wall to stop zombies. A wall one block high does not stop zombies. A wall two blocks high does, because they cannot climb that high.
I'm sure there is, but I actually don't use guns or bows, so I don't know what blocks to use. Probably like metal bars? Many other people here can help with this though.

Good stuff, I learned something new today.
You can do this with wooden frames. Only downside is if you accidentally hit E and remove them from beneath you. So best option is wooden bars. Select them in the menu then press R for more rotation options and you can make a floor that you can fire through. Better yet is Iron bars. Same principle as wooden bars only they are much stronger. They are costly to make though, where as wooden ones are cheap and affordable from horde night 1.
They don't have to be mounted in to wood frames. Just place them like you would any other block.
