What challenge do you use to not get bored?
I like to play using challenges I am making to keep the game... fresh.
For example:

The brainless explorer
-No point in intelligence or related skill.
-Don't use any crafting station (campfire, workstation etc)
-Can't use the trader (no trade, no quest. Can do "find the treasure" if I find a map)
-Can't have a base
-Can use a house for an horde but I can't use the same house twice and I only have
a few (game) hours to get ready

I am doing that right now and I also set the horde at everyday
and I erase the game if I die.

The first few days are pretty much jokes hordes with like... 3 zombies...
But once you get some level, the difficulty of the hordes increase pretty fast.
You need to be careful about your ammunition... you got only one day to get ammo,
and you can't craft some. You also have to be careful with your forged
steel as you can only get some from loot by destroying stuff using the wrench.
A lot of fun :p

Next time I may tried to play with blunderbuss as ranged weapon...
(or even ONLY blunderbuss as weapon) see how far I can go without dying XD

Do you do stuff like that?
Any idea of fun challenges?

I'm going to move this to General Discussions, because it asks for ideas & opinions rather than knowledge base questions with objective answers.

I was hesitating about where to put it, thanks for the info.

I don't play enough to get bored I guess.

And I like to build, so I just keep building my base. I make new buildings, make tunnels between them. I'm trying to figure a good place to put my landing zone for the gyro.

And from time to time I start new games. I'm recently discovered Nitrogen, so I'm trying a map generated with it.

- no-Trading. It's not bad, certainly slowed leveling down for me. I didn't mind keeping treasure chests, just smelted the Dukes to brass.

- Keep perk points to a single tree only. I've played a character from every skill tree this way, mostly in A18 though.

- Hardcore (delete char on death). Fairly often.

- Mostly Melee. Hordes are fended off by cowering behind a sturdy block in a sturdy room, drinking plenty of coffee and maxing SexRex early (first thing to max for me) to keep the stamina up, and repairing often. I miss A18's option of wading into the horde with 90 defense and a big stick though (can't seem to go 10 seconds in that situation now without breaking all my things).
Try with hud turn off.... lol.
Good luck!

I'm currently on a day 50 insane dif, loot respawn off, always run daytime and 24 zombies.
One idea in mind is to never have things respawn (specifically, loot containers) and not raiding a trader POI before accepting a quest there to reset the location. Now that is hardcore.

I wonder how come people play this game for over a 1000 hours? I've tried a lot of things including mods random gen maps with custom POis, challenges, but after 20-30 days ingame it just feels like the same, EXACTLY the same.. (do a quest in the same POI for the 10th time for useless money, explore a bit, hunt a bit, mine for whatever, prepare for the horde.. repeat)

I agree, since A17 at least, and absolutely since A19 and the new loot system. i have roughly 2000 hours and since A17 i can barely make it to day 40 without getting so bored that i just start over on a new world. 3/4 of my hours are from A16. The last 3 Alphas are.....lacking. Lacking because of changes to AI, loot systems, and the FP's concentrating on menial stuff instead of real substantive additions. In fact they have patched out more stuff than they have brought into the game since A16, at least it feels like it.

This is a crafting game and you're not going to craft? That just seems silly to me. I'm doing what I call "The Cycle" - build a base in each biome and defeat the hoard there at least once. Dead is dead of course so deleting the game on death is a must. One thing I'm noticing is that as long as you build up the hoard is not a threat. They just scurry around beneath you. I recall the hoard being more difficult than this.

Not really a challenge...but after hearing to much about version 16 I decided to give it a shot. :) Should be fun :)

For me, it's the ability to think new base designs, build them, and test them out for the upcoming horde waves. I always like building new bases and if they work, I expand them.

Go play another game for a bit, something outside your comfort zone... Download a mod like War3suk or Darkness Falls and fight for your life for a time... Play MP with some friends on crazy difficulty... Flip some houses, or even an entire town... Dig the longest tunnel ever just because *I would never... utter boredom*... Or, go read a few good books, fish, mow the lawn, wash dishes and clothes (more ick.. love being retired) or something equally mundane. When you come back after another alpha drop, approach it as if it's an entirely new game. Focus on doing things differently like perks, weapon choices, etc. Works for me.

Edit *Well dang, did I ever read that wrong! Sorry... Challenge for me is doing things OTHER than what I always do, and forcing myself to do that. I play perma-death, no loot respawn anyway, but this time, I'm focusing on staying alive while moving constantly.. no permanent base. I allow myself to have small bases for clearing out a town, but if I can't find a workstation, I don't build one. I'm only playing Nomad but having to move to find the things I need means I can't carry much. I only just got a motorcycle, so it's a bit better. Still, this has been a pretty neat challenge for someone like me. It's hard to leave your comfort zone sometimes.

For me, many of my game hours are from multiplayer, but a slight majority might be from trying different play-styles (different types of melee, types of Horde base, perk-point strategies (like do you spread points out or stick to one tree), etc). If I have the time, I'd make a new game for each of those, and for me a new game needs to be played at least 30ish hours for me to feel like I've experienced most of the novelty of the thing.

Think I use the hardened nomad challenge : no perma base, never hide to wait for daylight, no crafting (not that you need that when speced into looting), boots on the ground / no transport during horde nights, need to leave the town / city after 1 day worth of looting

Extra challenge ; the old way : only firearm allowed is the blunderbuss
