Zombie pathing issues
So, i've spent ages building a maze type base, but whenever zombies show up they attack my walls rather than follow the path i've laid out for them.

i've checked to make sure that they can't reach my base entrance by digging up the wall (seriously...why can they do that?), i've double layered the wall with reinforced concrete to make it way harder than the doors i WANT them to go through, but still they persist with beating at the same bit of wall and it's infuriating.

This may not be your problem, but zombies can only calculate a path to you that covers a certain amount of blocks (not sure how many, but there is a limit).

If the path you have created is too long, it will not be a valid path for them to take, and they will instead beat on your walls.

They will try to avoid a traps, so maybe TONS of spikes could help. But like above - probably too big maze.
Im a little curious, could you give us some screenshots?

Ok...that makes sense actually.

I've just logged off, i'll try and put some screen shots up later, but it's basically in the Large Post Office, and it is quite a long winding trackway, it goes across the entire building four times.

Nope, that sounds like it may be my exact problem. Thank you for the explaination.

I have said this before, and the naysayers always have some xml code to quote. But the truth is, there is obviously other code not being considered. The zombies ARE programmed to attack your base as well. What that code is exactly, I don't know. But I have watched entire waves, during blood moon, specifically target my traps; killing themselves in order to destroy the traps and make way for the next wave. Literally going around a 70x70 wall laced with spikes, marching on the spikes, destroying the spikes and themselves. In my last 2 videos (go to my page and watch them if you want) I had zombies spawn within my land claim block radius, right at the start of the blood moon, and target my electric fence posts; taking them out, bringing down that fence, and then the horde breaks through the outer wall and moves into my gauntlet. I have watched screamers spawn near my base, call in a herd, and then watched the herd attack my walls....from a perched position on a house 200 meters away. There is no heat being generated, no crafting stations are on, and in the middle of the day. No noise, no light, etc. Here is a screenshot I just took of a tower, not attached to my base, or within my land claim block's radius nowhere near any heat that I am generating, in fact, there is no heat, nothing is turned on and my stuff is behind 7 walls 100 ft away in this shot. As you can see, I am returning home from a quest, and while I was gone, something attacked that tower.

So, keep that in mind when you build. I had also tried a maze before, and it was a total fail.

It wouldn’t have to be traps. They only avoid traps because they’re in the way, the same way a tree is in the way if they don’t go around.

@Johnson.

I have no problem with that, it makes perfect sense that if they can't reach you then they should try tearing the building down. (I think my problem is them all being top class engineers who can build their own stairway up to me, but i digress).

I know that the maze i've built works, because i've been using it for a while now, i used it all through Alpha 18, but the version i've built this time round is also a lot more complex...I guess i hadn't realised how much more i'd done to it this time around...also, i'm playing in Darkness Falls, so i'm not sure if maybe that's another reason why they seem a bit smarter than normal in this playthrough...

So...based on the advice i recieved here I made a few alterations to the base and changed my fighting platform to something a bit more centralised, and they followed the route just as planned. no more wall whackers.

thanks for all the help guys!
