But you can just take the 3rd option and dump your points in miner and use the steel axe as a weapon, and you can max it out with only 7 points in strength.
Then your melee spec also makes you good at mining and breaking things.
However, the Sledgehammer's AoE knockdown abilities make it excellent against groups of ferals/irradiated zombies, allowing you to save more ammo.
You can still fight ferals and irradiated zombies individually with the Steel Club, you just can't really fight them in groups, at least not very effectively in tight areas.
So to conclude:
1. Ammo Saver - Sledgehammer
2. Speed questing - Steel Club
If I had to pick, I'd still go with Sledgehammer overall, even after the nerf, but they both have their uses.
How many times can you swing the club as compared to how many times you can swing the sledge, in the same amount of time ?
That's just as important, or more important maybe, than the stamina cost, which of course to me, makes the steel club shine the most and is the better choice, given the right perks also.
EDIT...
Actually, now that I think of it, pretty sure this game calculates it in attacks per minute, in the description for each weapon. It's there to the right on the stats screen for the weapon you are checking.
I'm also pretty sure sledge has longer reach than the bat.
I do the same although I will be putting points into Pummel Pete this playthrough to try the Steel Club. I used to LOVE the Spiked Club in the older alphas (prior to the Baseball Bat's implementation). I do hate giving up that extra inventory slot though ;)
