There are many thinks influence a decent answer
generally spoken build a Baserock Bunker with a Ramp to overground. And later a Base of your choice when you have all materials you need
Right and wrong, in PVP its different because raiders will exactly look there for bases. Because of this my requests
Bad places:
Surrounded by water
- Zombies don't float... they also don't drown and will eventually dig out the island or any supports your building has... also flooded mine if you decide to dig down.
On a hillside or the top of a hill
- Similar to the water problem, but from one direction and usually digging under any walls you build. This can be adjusted for by building into the mountain instead of ontop of it, but then you run into a problem with spike placements and zombies falling from above onto the entrance area.
Inside of very close to any of the pre-built towns
- These areas will spawn zombies continually as well as a full respawn every day. Fine if you like a challenge, but starting out it can be a bad situation.
On top of caves or other fragile sub-structures.
- Stability is calculated from bedrock up. If at any point there is a block missing below a wall or other structure, stability is calculated from the next closest collumn that is solid to bedrock. It's complicated to explain, but in short, even a single block missing from under a wall of your base can equate to a structural weakness. If multiple blocks are missing, collapse becomes more likely.
Good places:
Anywhere that is reasonably flat
- Easy to build, good visibility for killing off approaching zombies, room to expand and build outter buildings.
Any of the pre-built but isolated buildings
- Like churches, 2-story houses and similar. Most of these building can be reinforced and defended fairly well. Although these will have zombies initially and when they respawn, they will not respawn if you are remaining in the area. Single story buildings, or those with a garage are a little harder to defend and build up without replacing areas with solid components instead of panels, but can still be done.
I take out the bottom steps to the 2nd floor. Then use the 2nd floor to put my forge, campfire, workbench ect ect. I spend the first few days just gathering materials then I start on a tower going stright up til it is level with the 2nd story of the house. Then I put a catwalk from an opening of the 2nd floor to the tower..like this. Still being worked on but held out on first 7th day horde almost to easily..lol

I also dig a tunnel from inside the house to the tower, and another branching out to a secrete entrance and then eliminate all doors on the house. (zeds go for doors so I eliminate that).
As I said just my personal way I like to do it. Only downside I have here so far is zeds come from the otherside of the house and get stuck trying to get to me...I have had to repair a few bricks on the other side but nothing major...YET!!!! :P
One of these big pits of water in the hub city bad.
Then again, I cant stand to make my own base, I just modify and commonly sit back doing nothing during horde nights. This will change when I get a better comp though.
