Basically, black wolves(Dire Wolves) are like mini-bosses. You should always look for them and never let them see you before you see them.
That is why it is always a good idea not to run forward blindly, or make too much sound.
For me, unless I'm unfairly beefy and dangerous, there is a 90% chance I'll be dead to a Dire Wolf, if I'm not careful enough. This way game keeps you on your toes.
But yeah they are tough, nearly as strong as a bear and faster. Not too hard to deal with, use your better speed and maneuverability to get above it or put something between you and it. Hopping a fence for example. It will take at least 4 blunderbuss shots to kill one.
Zombears and Direwolves only spawn at night for the same reason the wasteland biome is so torqued up. Running around at night punishes the unprepared. You can wait around till an exploit is posted, or you can evolve your gameplay.
It is not a zombie. When you carve it you get meat, not rotten flesh. Sure, it might be infected..but then it would drop tainted meat. I wish they would replace the dire wolves with a boss zombie. That would make more sense. I don't really care for an animal that does more damage, runs faster then a good portion of the high level zombies...and it appears at the start of the game. In a zombie game the dire wolf really doesn't make much sense. With the glowing red eyes it's more of a fantasy game creature and really doesn't have any place in 7 Days. Focus, IMHO should be on zombies. All the overpowered animals need to be hit with a nerf stick, keep the difficulty focused on zombies. If you want dangerous animals...make them zombie animals like the bear and doberman.
Shurenai pointed out recently that the glowing eyes are evidence that the dire wolf is zombified, or at least canonically not a ‘normal’ kind of animal. You’re right about it giving meat though, so it’s not exactly consistent either way.
I’m getting about one every two or three days on my relatively low gamestage, so it might be a little too frequent compared to the number of zombies, but I wouldn’t say it needs a large nerf at this point.
It may give normal meat, Because it's not dead- But it's absolutely (imo) infected by the zombie virus or whatever it is in 7DTD that makes zombies and turned the same kind of Feral that feral zombies are, The eyes say as much.
I think if we were going to theorize on what happened (I think TFP's backstory/lore is nuclear war?) I'd say that both flora & fauna have mutated, causing animals to change with increased size, strength and aggression. This could also work towards explaining how we don't get much useable meat from animals (gotta cut around the glowy bits!) and why farming doesn't follow "real life."
