There are many you tubers that are very good at the game and explaining things for new people. Being somewhat new myself I spent a fair bit of time watching The Rugged Gamer's for beginners series, 00 Critical's Alpha 18 series and now am working my way through Kage848's Alpha 18 series.

I pick and choose what I want to do from any of them and make the game my own that way.

Otherwise I am far too much of a noob myself to feel that I can give you valid specific advice.

1) GET A GUN. Even a quality 1 pistol will do, melee in A18 is kinda bad and wonky. So try not to get into melee range if you can help it. But where do you find a gun? At Points of Interest, in safes and on tops of some buildings. Look high and low.
2) IF IT LOOKS OUT OF PLACE, IT IS. If you're looting and you look at a block and say "that wavy block looks out of place" try breaking it. There'll probably be a loot behind it.
3) BEWARE THE PIGGIES. They've killed me more than the zoms have, especially in early game.
4) ASSUME EVERYTHING IS DANGEROUS. Because it is. Almost every Point of Interest (PoI) has false floors and breakable tiles. With enough time, you'll learn where the devs like to put them, but until then be cautious and always have an escape plan if possible when looting.
5) FORTIFY. When you settle down, remove windows (if any) from the place you're inhabiting. That'll make the building you took over not just harder to break into, but also make it harder to tell if someone's in it at that time to both zoms and other players. While we're on the subject of fortifying...
6) GO WITH COBBLESTONE... whenever possible. Wood is nice and cheap, but so are rocks and clay, and for something you can reinforce with more rocks and clay and repair with more rocks and clay, that makes it nice and cheap while having 1500 (!) hp vs 225 hp of the wood variant.
7) HAVE FUN. Goes without saying, but try to enjoy yourself playing this game. Or else you tend to hop on the forums and complain.
Hope you follow suggestion 7 and stay healthy out there (both in game and IRL)!

you will find a ton of useful information in this thread:
https://steamcommunity.com/app/251570/discussions/0/2263565217511162787/

it not necessarily designed for noobs but its all stuff that will come in handy in your first playthrough.

your approach will largely depend on what kind of play-style you want to go for. sneaky ninja looter? builder? melee tank? all have their merits. it also depends on if you are playing solo or coop.

a useful tip for surviving your first horde night is to not even try to build a base for it, but to find a large building that you can get up on the roof of, then make sure you destroy any way for the zombies to get up and just chill up there. its boring a.f. but an easy way to live through the first horde night. (i didnt do this and got murdered in minutes when my clever base plan utterly failed and i fell off my walls like an idiot)

i find that pumping lucky looter is a good thing early, as it helps me find better stuff while looting. vitamins are an early game best friend, as they keep you safe from all infection and food sickeness while they last (also helpful on horde night). so pop a vitamin and gorge yourself without worry (you can even eat rotton meat this way). they are pretty common to find too (especially in bathrooms).

if you want to really cheese it, there are plenty of ways of building a quick zombie proof base at the moment by heavily exploiting the AI (that can be done in the first few days). but the most important thing to know in general is how to control where the zombies go when they come at you (even if you dont want to cheese it too hard).

here's a few early base building tips (not too cheesy): if you leave them a way to get to you, they will always go that way rather than attacking from all directions at once. also, they go for elevation first, so building a single width wall/path with a nice easy ramp to your front door (ideally 3 blocks tall and not too long) will funnel all of the zombies into a straight line for easy headshots (just make sure the floor level of your base is at least as high as your wall leading to the door, or they may decide to go through the walls to get at you instead). they will always attack doors before walls assuming your walls are stronger than your doors.

you can build a ladder to get back into your base if you fall off your walls like an idiot the way i did when i died on my first horde night. normally they will b-line it for ladders, but if you leave a gap at the bottom (even just one block) the zombies will not see it at a ladder they can climb and will thus largely ignore it, giving you an easy path back into your base that only you can use. if this seems too cheese, you could also build the ladder with two blocks gap and jump for it, or even build a single block a few feet away to jump off of and a 3 block gap in your ladder. this is actually the best bet because then the zombies will walk under your ladder and will not be able to attack it if they go into random rage mode. wood frame blocks can be stood upon, but fired through, making a nice early game murderhole system for the top of your walls to fire down on any zombies that decide that coming through the walls is a good idea. just be carefull because the wood frames cant take much damage before they break (even from yourself), and if anything is being supported by said frame (such as your emergency ladder) it will be instantly destroyed if the supporting frame is destroyed also. also be wary as wood frame blocks can not support much lateral weight, so dont build out more than one block from your walls this way, or you risk potential collapse and waste of resources and time.

Remember, like all Steam games the community hub includes a guides section. Though not all guides are current, there are hundreds of guides written, and you can search for ones in a particular language.

Also, the thread KromeHWI linked to is a good one.

When you first start out, once you have a gun. Take over a Brick building. Use your claim block so No New Zombies Spawn in it. Mine out Iron from cars, and there will be orange blackish rocks that will be A lot of Iron. Make a Forge, and start cooking iron, to make forge iron and make iron spikes. Steel Bars for windows, from the Forge to shoot enemies and they're strong too.

1) As soon as you spawn the first time, don't move more than 20 steps from where you spawn and do ALL the steps in the initial quest (see top right corner of your screen). This is REALLY important. Once you've finished all the steps, you get four skill points to spend, AND your map then shows the location to the nearest Trader.
-Most games have "spawn protection", so that a new player, if they don't roam far, should not see many zombies for at least a couple game hours. More than enough time to finish the initial quest, spend your skill points, and grab some basic resources.

2) After completing your basic quest, you need to grab some basics:
-1000 wood
-400 stone
-200 clay
-some feathers
-5 bones and a couple animal fat (from Road Ribs)
-a couple dozen cotton

3) Turn 5 bones into a bone shiv

4) Turn the clay and rock into cobblestone, then make that into blocks. Put that in your belt. If you hear/see a dog or wolf you can make a four block verticle "idiot tower" by looking down, jumping, and placing a block. Dogs and wolves (or zombies) cannot reach 4 blocks high....however they CAN beat the blocks and make them collapse. But if you have arrows, getting on a 4 block tower gives you time to kill a dog or wolf, or heal without getting bit.

4) If you see a pig, do NOT attack it. Instead, make 4 cheap wooden spikes (look like jacks). Walk up to the pig, and place one of the spikes in front of the pig. He will walk over it, hurting himself. Repeat with another spike until he's dead. You won't get XP, but you won't die from pork attack, which is just as important early game. Use bone shiv on the pig after he's dead. NOT before.

5) Take the cotton that you picked and turn it into cloth.

6) If you get injured (health anywhere below 100%), birds will find you and attack. They will kill you quick, like 3 or 4 hits and your either infected, or dead. If you do get injured, first thing you're going to want to do is bandage yourself. Use your cloth to make a simple bandage. Once you've used it, eating a can of food will start to heal you.

7) Skill points is a long discussion, and everybody will give different advice. Mine for early game is to take a point in:
-Lucky Looter (so you start getting better loot right away (which you can sell for food at trader)
-Healing Factor (so once you use a bandage, you start to regen health without food)
-Miner 69er (so you can immediately start making Level 2 Tools
-Javelin (melee in this game is messed up, IMO it's a lot safer to stab with a spear than a club)

Sunset on most servers is 2200. That is when zombies start to run at you. You need to be somewhere safe and secure each night by that time. Early game, your easiest bet is to make about 12 wooden frames, find a hotel, and "block up" the side (use Idiot Tower technique mentioned above). It is important that you block up vertically: No ladders, not "staircase fashion". Why? Because zombies CAN climb. Safest buildings for an early night are motor lodge with the pool (get to the HIGHEST part of the roof), the Hampton Inn looking hotel (again get to the HIGH part, or the zombies will just come out the windows and eat you), the smaller junk yard's highest roof, or the rear of the firehouse (with the upper glass windows looking down on the upper bunk room). Indoor safety: The large post office has an unreachable upper ledge, as does the Stadium (over the bathrooms) but getting into the stadium is rough.

If you have time before sunset and are a bit more aggressive, fight your way into any diner (except the one with the car in the entranceway), or a firehouse. You can barricade your self in any bathroom or kitchen: Most are made with concrete walls, so all you have to defend is the doorway itself (drop a flagstone block in the doorway, improve it with cobble, and you can just stand there and safely beat any zombie trying to get in.

There's so much to this game, I'm sure I'm skipping over some important tips, but there are the basics.

OH---three really important things to find/get on Day 1: Snow (to melt for water, easy to carry), cooking pot, and helmet light.

For Alpha 18...

You don't need a forge & a workbench by the end of day one to be successful. If you're willing to slow things down a bit for the first seven days, then I can give you some helpful advice. Just keep in mind that my playstyle may not meet your expectations, and there are many different ways to approach this game. See my posts (below), determine if it makes sense to you , and give it a try.

Also, most everyone feels that the game is going at 100 miles per hour because there's always something to do (except for the first few nights). Also keep in mind—because there's so much to learn to become proficient—that this game has a steep learning curve and will take you a while to master. Think about it this way: If it were easy, don't you think it also might be quite boring. If you're feeling a bit pressured, then that's actually a good thing. That means the developers are challenging you to survive. After all, it is a survival game!

Anyway, here's my advice:

To answer your question regarding skill points and what you should be doing, this is where I like to put the first 4 or 5 points: mother lode, master chef, iron gut, lucky looter, and the huntsman. Then healing factor, physician, and living off the land. Why? In the beginning of the game it's about basic survival & you really should be focusing on five things: food, water, health, shelter, and gathering resources. Don't worry about killing zombies and being 100% buff. It's going to take some time. The longest game I ever played was over 500 days. Most games for people will last between 50 - 200 days.

The first week or so you should be focusing on gathering food and feathers, finding a POI to set up your base, finding a second POI for your horde base, stacking up on wood and stone, finding a water source & a cooking pot, stockpiling cloth, and hopefully finding some seeds (& other mats for your farm plots) so you can start farming as soon as possible. By the time you do all of that, you'll probably be at level 20 or higher because while you're doing all of these things you'll be killing zombies as you stumble across them. And only loot from outside sources (like garbage, cars, etc.) & small structures/buildings to start. The larger buildings have a lot of zeds in them, so wait until you build up your character before looting them.

After that, you'll need to figure out which weapons you like to use. Personally I like the bows, spears, & clubs (melee weapons) to start (then move up to compound bows & stun batons later on). You only need feathers, wood, and stone to make arrows, and a small amount of wood or scrap iron to repair your club. These are my primary weapons throughout the game; I only use guns as backup in emergency situations to save on ammo (especially in the beginning of the game). I usually use a shotgun because the ammo is easy to make. And stick with cloth armor in the beginning of the game and switch to military armor later in the game (cloth armor in A18 is pretty good w/out mods). The iron and steel armor provide better protection, but it weighs you down too much—and it's louder (making it easier for the zeds to hear you). However, with the mod "customized fittings" you can bring the heavy armor rating down to the light armor rating. But remember, the mod only works for the piece of armor that it is installed into—thus, you would need five mods for your complete armor set (which is difficult to obtain). Or, use a combination of heavy armor and light armor. But, if you want to maximize movement & stealth... use light armor only.

But, if you ask 20 different people you're going to get 20 different answers because there are so many different ways to play this game.

For food, bacon and eggs is probably the best thing to eat in the early game. Once your farm is thriving, you can make unlimited amounts of vegetable stew, and limited amounts of blueberry pie & many other things.

RE Crafting: Tool quality is controlled by Miner 69er; you can no longer craft level six tools; you have to loot them or buy them; however, wrench quality is controlled by salvage operations.

Armor quality is controlled by its perk, for light or heavy armor.

Specific weapons' quality is controlled by its perk under the various attributes.

This should be enough to get you going; best of luck!

ps At night, you should be crafting, mining, or upgrading your base. And don't forget to just play and try to enjoy the game. Two-hour days extend your days & nights so you don't feel like you're constantly hurrying to get things done, and gives you 1.5 hours of daylight & 30 minutes of night.

Also, while looting, watch your inventory and build chests wherever you need, marking them on your map. I would add to this by saying you should use 2x chests at each location: One for stackables & one for non-stackables. This will make it easier for you to decide what you really need to bring back to your base if you only have time to make one trip (plus it keeps the boxes better organized) . Furthermore, the more stackables you leave behind for future trips will save you time since you'll be adding to the box every day that you loot. Thus, you can bring them all back at once.

Make sure you place your chests up high on the side of a building—and not on the ground. If you place them too low, zeds can destroy them and you will lose all the loot that's inside. Place them in a similar manner inside your base for the same reason.

For your base, try to find a small, flat-roofed building (such as Joey's Used Cars or Bob's Burgers). Building up walls on the roof will be quick and easy, since the base structure is already in place—and the roof is much safer than trying to survive at ground level (and Zeds don't spawn on the roof if your land claim block (LCB) & bedroll are bugged for some reason). Make sure you remove any ladders that lead up to the roof to keep the zeds out. Small buildings are also quicker and easier to reinforce the walls by upgrading them, and adding wood spikes around the perimeter. Larger buildings will require more time, effort, and resources—and are harder to protect, when attacked. Don't forget to place your land claim block & bedroll to keep the zombies out. Don't build at ground level or underground. You'll never be safe.

I would NOT, however, build my base on top of important POIs, such as: crack-a-book, pawn shops, shotgun messiah's, any of the hardware stores, shamway foods, etc. If you want your loot to respawn after " X" number of days, it won't happen once you build your base in a building and put down a land claim block & your bedroll. But, if you don't plan to respawn loot… then it's not an issue.

Also, try to build in or near a city for easy access to loot, close to a trader for buying and selling items, and close to a water source—unless you use the infinite water hack.

Furthermore, don't use your base (where you keep all your loot) as a horde base. If it gets destroyed, you're going to lose all your loot. Set up your horde base in another POI (building) somewhere nearby.

To decrease the amount of heat you produce at your base, don't use torches. Use candles instead (or nothing at all); you only need a few of them to create enough light to see what you're doing. From what I understand, the new lamps don't produce any heat at all—which is another option. You could also restrict smelting in your forges & cooking in your campfires by only using them when you're away from your base. So start them up when you leave, and turn them off when you return (although there will still be some residual heat given off for some time after you turn them off). Otherwise, time it so the fuel in the forge runs out 2 to 3 hours before you plan on returning. Also, zombies will not attack your base if you're not there.

I like to play slow and steady! Using good tactics and not taking any unnecessary risks—AKA trying not to die. I usually play 7D2D like a simulator as if it were real. It helps to keep you alive. Thus, you probably won't find me in any medium or large POIs on day one. I usually spend the first seven days on survival activities (see info above); however, if somebody likes to play a "run and gun" strategy from day one and it works for them... there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

This game is very adaptable and will allow many different play styles. However, if you get too loosey goosey, you will pay the price! The only problem I have is when new players push the limits in a haphazard manner, fail miserably, and then whine to the developers to Nerf the game. If TFP listens to this type of nonsense too often, the game is going to get dumbed down to the point where it's no longer a survival game and a waste of time to play.

This game has a steep learning curve and there's a lot to learn; you're not going to master it in an afternoon. Keep playing, ask questions in the forum, and perhaps play with someone who knows the game.

Good luck!

build up high. zombies can't jump, climb etc. building on top of a bridge is ideal.

I took over the prison, threw down a LCB, and returned to find a zed wandering around the fenced in yard. So zeds can still spawn, just not sleepers in that POI
Gwizzz Jun 8, 2020 @ 5:21pm
As far as tips, when selecting a POI to take over the first couple of nights always go for height, a busted up building that is 5 stories tall gets you out of zeds detection range at night. Whereas a ground floor hideaway always ends up with zeds knocking on the door in the middle of the night.

Spears are better than a primitive bow. Notice I said SPEARS, not A spear. Place 3 or 4 on your toolbelt. Chuck them at zeds...1...2.. they fall down, a 3rd to finish it off on the ground. Collect your spears, rinse and repeat. The throw action is a power action and does a lot more damage than stabbing them or using a stone arrow. If there are multiple zeds always target the fastest one and leave the slow ones (crawlers, tourists, big mama and the other big slow zed) for last. Most zeds will rush you if you injure them.. unless you throw spears at them.. then they just fall down and die. The utility worker, soldier zombies, frozen lumberjack and biker are tougher. They will still fall down but will get back up. So when they fall down.. run up and collect your spears, put them back on the tool belt and and throw them again. As long as you keep spears repaired you can keep chucking them over and over and over.. When a spear is picked up and goes into your inventory simply shift+left click on it to quickly send it to the first open slot on your tool belt. That will allow you to become the ultimate spear chucking zombie slayer.

Also.. throwing spears while sneaking increases your first strike damage multiplier so often one or two spears will kill a zed instead of several. If you haven't put any points into javelins your throw distance will be pitiful. You may get detected while sneaking before you get into range to throw anything. Practice throwing at nothing before throwing at a zed. Nothing worse than seeing your pointy stick sticking into the the ground right next to the zed instead of in the zed. You can pick up spears that missed and are sticking in the ground (or wall) but lead the zed away from it first.

Save your feathers for making iron crossbow bolts.

I still use spears and I have a crossbow and silenced pistol. Why? Easy to repair, quiet, no feather or gunpowder required to use.

The crossbow is useful for headshotting sleepers when clearing POIs, and the pistol is for ferals, dogs, wolves, coyotes, and even vultures that rush you. A blunderbuss takes WAY to long to reload to be useful. Use one only if you can't find a pistol or sawed off shotty. Just be aware shooting any firearm without a suppressor is the same as ringing the dinner bell.

When you get better guns and armor you can ditch spears but in the early game they rule supreme.
