I felt this was important enough to hack in a solution for ComSenMod (now available from the mod launcher). In ComSenMod, instead of having to fight your survival instincts, there are fewer sleepers at low gamestages so you have a chance to establish yourself.
ur post sounds a little bit like sarcasm. of course u cant loot a poi on day 1.
or do u want an auger and an ak with tons of ammo on day 1, too?
that would be lame.
u can play "creative" btw.
I think you’re distorting the OP’s concern. He wants to “clear out a multilevel home to claim as my own for a little while.” That sounds like someone thinking about early game survival, not late game defenses & tools.
Thing is, I honestly don’t know where you’re ‘supposed’ to spend your first night anymore. I’ve got enough hours that I can work around it, but again... I’m naked outside in the zombie apocalypse with a can of chili. My first instinct is not to immediately play lumberjack/carpenter and start building a structure from scratch. That seems like something that shouldn’t be feasible until later, once you’re established. My first instinct is to find a place I can hide, and until RWG gets a lot more interesting, that pretty much means a POI.
Where do you spend your first night?
You start clearing the ground floor, clear the upper floor(s) and then you discover a freakin' 20-room cellar dungeon (slight exageration*). The other day I was clearing what seemed to be a regular house. In the cellar I found an auditory, a burial ground and a cell block. Sounds legit.
Needless to say that I had miscalculated the time (and effort) it would take to clear the place :)
Not even that. I barely know any of the new POIs, but I make it my first priority to ensure I know exactly where an exit or two is... I rarely fight sleepers inside the POI and 9/10 times I lead them outside, where they can be easily kited and picked off 1 by 1. Plus its almost impossible to be cornered and surrounded that way, too.
If theres dogs in the POI, they get priority at earlier stages - I like to make it a point to find a gun safe and arm myself within the first few starting days. Angrier wild animals are.. an issue.
My plan was to clear the house I spawned next to so I could hide out on the second level, pretty standard plan, or it used to be. The POI you spawn next to is not typically so heavily populated by zeds, but this one was.
There was no sarcasm in my post, sorry you read into something that wasn't there, and no I don't expect to find an auger and ak on day 1.
That would indeed be lame.
I am aware that there is a creative mode, but I prefer to play the game as it was intended by the devs, which is why I don't play with mods.
Keep on a trollin'.
You got that right. Wolves, bears, and dogs are just about silent death now, even on Day 1. If you happen to get a chance to hear it before it kills you, you have to run and pray you have frames on your belt or you've got a shotgun and some shells or you're kibble.
If it helps there Sarge ... Below is an old screenshot that I took months ago during the experimental A17.
My safe house was usually rubble buildings. If I place the LCB in the middle of the screen where the cursor is shown (using a 71x71 LCB size), I can cover 3 rubble buildings plus the little water tower. (easier now to see with LCB boundary box view, not back then)

A home-away-from-home, good visibility, no traps, few zeds, etc. Finding a group of rubbled buildings can be difficult, but worth the trouble to find in the first few days. My 2nd and 3rd choice was an Adult Movie theater or Buzz's Bar (home of the cooking pot)
Yeah, that's a nice setup if you are lucky enough to spawn near it Day 1. I just need to learn to adjust my play style to the new dynamics in the game.
I do actually like the fact that some buildings (POIs if you must) are difficult to clear on day 1 or early on in the game. You find a place full of zombies then you need to go somewhere else. You need to keep looking until you find a place that you can clear, or build your own shelter.
