SMG handgun?
Hi! Love the game. Since the SMG takes 9mm ammo, scraps into handgun parts, and there aren't many handguns in the game... is it effectively a handgun? I am running an agility build and wondering now if the handgun perks have any affect on the SMG.

Yes, the agility/handgun perks affect the SMG.

The Automatic perks affect the ak47 and m60, but not the SMG.

This is useful information, I'd assume SMG would be affected by automatic perks. Thanks!

Well, the perks do tell you which weapons they affect. I think everyone, including TFP, agrees that SMG seems like it would be in the machine-gun category, but it is easy to see that it's not.

Yeah, i mean.. Why would you consider something NAMED a Sub MACHINE gun
be a "machine gun"??? Utter madness....

Yeah...Right?

If TFP keeps what we have, then they need to change the label to read MP-5 and not an SMG. Then the label of machine-pistol might be accepted a little better ... :/

If the SMG was a Thompson Sub Machine Gun, then yeah, it wouldn't make sense, but a MAC-10 would be a machine-pistol (if we had one).

Unless we installed a trigger-group semi ofc. :steamhappy:

I have yet to find a game, that uses weapon-skills or peks in any way, and is perfectly (or even remotely) consistent, when it comes to smg-type weapons (that range from mp to auto-rifle), or auto-weapons and trigger-group-mods.

Maybe I just got used to it since the days of Jagged Alliance 2. :steamhappy:

Funny thing about the english language, There are often multiple ways to interpret things..

For example, 'Sub Humans' are things/creatures that are LIKE humans but are not in actuality Human. It is lesser, Less than, inferior to.

So, A Sub Machine gun, can very much be a thing that is like a machine gun, but, is not in actuality a machine gun. It is less than, Inferior to an actual submachine gun; It is a personal defense weapon that tries to emulate a machine gun in a smaller profile more akin to a pistol.

In fact, that smallness and compactness is what binds the SMG and the Pistol together in the Agility tree- They are small, compact, and suited to stealth and overall agility while retaining a moderate amount of damage as far as firearms go.

More generic names, like “SMG” over “MP-5” or “4x4” over “Jeep,” are typically deliberate. It deters lawyers from knocking on your door about IP infringement, and it deters players from quibbling over details of a particular real-life thing, instead of seeing its role in the game for what it is.

Also, fictitious names can be hilarious. Anyone noticed the “MayLag” washing machine? I love it!

I remember when the hunting rifle had a Bremington logo on the side of the barrel. I am assuming they removed it because of lawyers.

TFP probably deliberately selected "maylag" because they know Sears is too poor these days to hire a lawyer to litigate copyright infringement…

No, no. The fictitious names are parody, which is fair use. So a Sham sandwich is fine, while a Spam sandwich could be trouble.
