Report a translation problem
Every method of attack at your disposal is longer than the zombies reach. You can literally box a zombie down with the fist weapon without the zombie ever getting to swing by rhythmically tapping S, because you dont get into its range for it to attack, and hover just outside its reach.
So, There may be some latency issue you're experiencing, try using the 'gfx af 0' command from the console while in game and see if the issue persists.
Or, alternatively, A second possibility is that you are -dramatically- underestimating your own reach with any given weapon.
Check xml files, sledge and bat have 2.6 block range, club 2.2, spear maybe 2.8 not sure I don't use it. Thing is if you place 2 blocks between you and the zombie you will miss him with sledge 50% of time even with 2.6 block range. Something is wrong with new glancing system.
I recently tried the sledgehammer in A18 and it seems to be really short reach compared to the Z's.
