You can't operate it remotely, but you CAN operate it manually.
There's no real point to it, but it's a thing you can do.
As you said there is no point. I did not realize you could do it, but given that you can, why would you??
IMO best way is motion sensors and setting it's field of fire.
The only triggers I use are the ones that let me target traps at specific tiles or whatever. Pressure plates and tripwires, basically.
I find the motion sensors value outweighs the wattage used.
