For building a big base you will need 2 forges. More than 2 you will get problems to feed them ;-)

100% is one forge.
Many players are making 3 forges - mid game they are not expensive anymore. One for steel, one for cement and one for ammo.
It's really up to you. You will know it when you get out of cement ;-) By starting a base you will need much cement.
I like to run them all at once, and play with the screamers :)

---Sometimes I have an extra for iron, but not often.
The Iron forge usually runs 8-12 hours a day, the others are mostly idle (at least after may base is upgraded to reinforced concrete).
Wood windows don't require glass; only wood. And yet they can be smashed to receive glass.
Go figure.
