In fact, Unity is doing the rendering, not steamvr.
I suggest you use a different platform. There are no news but only a "soon" which can mean anything and if we can judge by previous "soons" the soonest is 6 months.(Or worse, months after 2020.1 is released...) So if you are starting a new project which is consumer oriented, you should consider the Oculus Platform. If you are developing for standalone Enterprise you could use Windows MR with HP Reverb.
Isn't the steam VR renderer special cause it allows more lights or something like that.
I'm not an expert on rendering in unity, so if i could use Steam VR's premade visual style, that would be cool.
i also like their VR features implementation, like the teleportation and interaction mechanics.
but damn 2016, screw that lol
but yea id like to utilize all the steam vr interaction features as well,
maybe ill just get the latest version compatible with it and port over to the new one whenever they do release it.
Does anyone know what the last possible compatible unity version with steamvr?
If you want to use the SteamVR Unity Plugin, it's supported up to and including Unity 2019.3. It uses the old built-in Unity VR system, but in Unity 2020.1 and on they are discontinuing that in favor of the new XR plugin management system (https://blogs.unity3d.com/2020/01/24/unity-xr-platform-updates/). This new XR plugin management system is supposed to make all parts of development easier, but it supports pretty much every major VR provide except for SteamVR/OpenVR.
Unity has said that Valve is working on a plugin for that new system which, when it releases, will allow us to develop for SteamVR in Unity 2020.1 and onward. However, it hasn't been released, there haven't been changes to the old SteamVR plugin in months, and typical Valve hasn't said a word about if or when this new plugin will come out which is why some devs like me are pretty frustrated. Hopefully with Alyx now released, however, they'll be able to put more developers on that plugin and we might get something soon.
I was looking into the new Unity XR stuff but i don't really understand what the improvements are lol
it seems to work, but is not complete at the moment

The version in the asset store seems to be broken but may work in some limited cases.
