Was like, shoot maybe they made it so we could use Steam Link to stream VR games between rigs, my Index and i9-12900k/NVIDIA 4090/64gbDDR5 Linux rig is in my tiny living area, would be great to play on the back porch or, even better, in the back yard lol when its not raining that is, gotta love this weird warm PNW winter this year.
But no, just love for stupid Meta Quest bs VR. People should stop using Meta. Then maybe VR could stay awesome.
Just like for myself and others, ALVR does not work for many.
Maybe because I have a Nvidia GPU, or because its a quest, or whatever. Rarely it does work, and if it does, then it's very bad.
That's why it would be awesome to get steam link support on Linux.
Of course, there are also some functional flaws. When playing alyx, the window glass is black, and it is unclear what the problem is. Additionally, there are too few VR games that can run, making it difficult to view virtual desktops.
The configuration information is as follows:
you have not tried the official fix for no display as of SteamVR 2 then. the official fix is to force steam to just launch vrmonitor.sh instead of launching it normally, you can do this by typing "./home/(YourUsername)/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/SteamVR/bin/vrmonitor.sh"
you WILL lose SteamVR Home by doing this but atleast steamvr will now render correctly for you.
ALVR has been working great on a Quest 3 and my various Linux devices as of late.
THAT BEING SAID......... I have done a bunch of Distro hopping. Having a Steam Link work with Linux would make Linux VR a whole lot easier for new people.
My current Distro is SteamOS 3 (from the steamdeck image), Steam Link VR Linux compatibility would complete it. WiVRn is available as a Flatpak on SteamOS 3 but needs a launch option set for every game you want to use it, including changing the default XR runtime (XR_RUNTIME_JSON environment variable). This can be hit or miss for some games as they don't fully support openXR but a version of openVR. Which causes input breaking amongst other things.
Having Steam Link VR Linux compatibility would also benefit the 3-4 VR Window Managers that rely on Steam VR as a VR Server.
In short, Valve is holding back on a big power move. Unless they have a new VR headset lined up that is using said technology, there is no reason to not enable it.
****Note::: It is linux, maybe there is a hidden environment variable to enable it but I could be wrong.****
/home/"user name"/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/SteamVR/bin/vrmonitor.sh %command% Not as written in other comments.
BUT! In Xplane12, ALVR has 'washed-out' graphics. WiVRn SERVER does a better job. Linux-Mint with WiVRn is better than my Windows 11 now. Only problems with either VR Linux Servers the Quest3 controllers won't work. VR mouse does. And to get to your desktop while in VR, switch to 'immersive' and then back again to carry on playing.
The REAL thing I miss is 'Virtual Desktop". This is/was great for all the users of the paid for bloated MS Crap.

sorry this post is old but do I put this line in steamvr or in a game I'm going to play
