We don't really know anything so we have to wait and see
That's why it should be sold by Valve directly.
Also check prior that fragility of Index controllers has been addressed. And if you don't have top of the line GPU you might stay with OG Vive + Knuckles when Valve's VR AAA will arrive.
Screen Door Effect is still there, so even Index doesn't make practical difference to OG Vive. Plus LCD is inferior to OLED. Plus Index's lens produce awful glare similar to Oculus CV1.
1. I'm guessing my 2060 isn't enough. Is 2080 enough or do I have to 2080ti? 2080ti pushing my budget too much.
2. I can't mail-forward because I can't even buy the damn thing... I guess I can use a VPN but idk... steam might ban me or something... could make a new account... too much hassle. lame
You can get OG Vive and enjoy hell out of VR without depraving yourself out of pocket money.
For me SDE is the biggest downside of gen 1 headsets. But Valve Index doesn't solve SDE issue. And you don't get practical difference with original Vive other than resolution comfort. You still can't see cockpit in sim games clearly or play competitive in flight sims. You still can't use Virtual Desktop comfortably as a replacement of a real desktop. You still can't watch movies with FullHD crispness.
While I would pay premium to get rid of SDE day one, I have no desire to replace my OG Vive with Index. Thou tastes might be different, and if you're picky for last and freshest "gadgets" it might irritate you.
If you'd later buy Knuckles to pair with Vive and a Steam Controller dongle you'll be able to use Vive wands as leg trackers.
2. There are mail forward services that order product themselves for additional fee.
1. I tried getting an offer from a mail forwarder and they wanted 1600$ so I said nope.
2. I agree that upgrading my 2060 X rift CV1 is probably not worth it for most, but I truly have no life because real life is lame and I spend a LOT of time in VR (right now with highly modded F4VR)...
So when I'll be able to actually buy it, I'll buy 2080 X index because SDE isn't a yes or no but how much and because I would really like to be able to read small letters in game without straining my eyes.
Sadly, there is no way to get index in a reasonable price right now for me... and I'll also need to find a way to sell my current laptop so that I wouldn't be too wasteful
It's probable that Valve would expand list of countries for Index this year. If they'd actually achieve to launch first of VR titles they've promised.
There is also an option to get Samsung WMR headset and use Vive's base stations and controllers. But since you're running CV1 it might be closely same expensive as getting Index. On the other hand WMR has OLED. But I've heard that ergonomics is bad for long sessions even for Odyssey+. Samsung lazy sadists.
I thought about samsung or pimax etc but then I will need to also buy the base stations and controllers separately which is probably as complicated as getting the whole index in the first place
Valve Index also seems to be step back in build quality from Vive. Which is understandable, since Valve have started factory business from scratch. But Index is nowhere near as bad, as what Index offering. Also I hope Valve would solve baby problems of Index soon. They are known to have slow and steady consistent progress across their whole business. Not a guarantee, but there are good chances improvements will happen.
