Photon Latency Issue on 7900 XTX series AMD cards
I'd like to report a bug in the current version (including latest beta, and all previous versions of the past few months) of SteamVR related to timing incompatibilities with AMD 7000 series GPUs (7900 XTX w/ Vive Pro 1 in my case).

This appears to be similar to a bug that was fixed for NVIDIA 4000 series cards as well, specifically in this update: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/250820/view/3666530992740504707 (Beta 1.25.4). It manifests in high tracking latency in direct rendering mode, the workaround from this reddit post fixes the problem: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamVR/comments/118vlrl/fix_for_rtx_4090_and_vr_tracking_input_latency_lag/

Here's a script I wrote to automatically apply the workaround from the reddit thread for now: https://gist.github.com/PiMaker/73c3b27f35c8293716fd50fa2749a135

The effect of setting that option to anywhere from 7 to 10ms offset is drastic and leads to a much smoother VR experience. The default state is quite motion-sickness inducing due to the high photon latency.

Potentially related to this, here is an issue report on the openvr github for (vsync-)timing problems: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/openvr/issues/1729

I've opened a ticket with the AMD driver divison too, in case the problem is not on your side (I believe as much since the fix for NVIDIA cards also came from your end) but with AMD's drivers.

+1 on this! I've also been having this issue ever since I upgraded.

I am also having this issue after I installed my RX 7900 XTX. The workaround is effective, but it still feels a little bit more delayed than it was with my RTX 2070 Super, the GPU I just upgraded from.

I hope this gets fixed soon. I never get motion sickness from VR games, but this latency issue is really screwing with my stomach. The whole reason why I bought the Index in the first place was because the Oculus Rift S had this issue and I could not figure out how to solve it.

I am also having this issue

I am still having this issue over a year after the release of the affected cards. Is this something that requires a fix in Steam, or is this an issue with the AMD graphics drivers?

It has been over a year since this was posted, and this major bug is still greatly impacting usability on the most powerful card from the second-largest GPU vendor.

Good I found it, same problem with PSVR2 and my new 7900xt. The solution works only with my vive pro, but I did not notice any difference with psvr2. Any ideas?

+1 cmon Valve. This is insane. The issue has been open for a year and a half. Next gen Nvidia is going to cost a small fortune. Some of us want to play VR without breaking the bank by picking AMD cards.

I have directly filed a bug report with steamVR via help.steampowered.com. I'll try to reply if I get a response.

I did also file a report and they answered as following:

Thanks for following up.

We've had similar reports from other users using AMD GPUs. Have you shared this information with AMD as well?

Unfortunately, we do not have an immediate fix for you at this time, but I will pass this along to the developers and we will continue to monitor for any increases in issues related to this. The developers use a number of community sources to help investigate the frequency and severity of issues like this. These issues are continually being addressed through Steam and SteamVR updates.

I suggest using the workaround (this post) for the time being.

I would encourage you to search for the issue and post about it in one of the more active Steam community hubs, as other users may be experiencing the same thing.

Again, I am sorry that we do not have a fix for you at this time. If there's anything else we can assist you with please let us know.

Some new movement on this. OP of the AMD post is suggesting we like the post to show interest to AMD. An AMD developer has already responded to the post saying they now have an internal ticket.

New info. photon latency issue has reportedly been resolved. Fix will roll out whenever the next driver update is scheduled. AMD support rep doesn't know when that will happen.

Hey there. The issue was successfully reproduced. A fix has been identified and implemented, I believe it's undergone some preliminary testing and things are looking positive.

Unfortunately I've no timelines on ETAs, but I'd imagine this fix will make it into an upcoming driver package release.

According to the AMD forums, the driver that released today (24.12.1) fixed this issue and the fix was included in that driver.

Maybe try reinstalling the driver with the reset option?
