Can't move my SteamVR intallation to a different drive
One of my hard drives is dying and unfortunately that's where my Steam installation was located. So I did as is told in this guide:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7418-YUBN-8129&l&l=english
Everything seemed alright. I've moved the installation from D:\Steam to S:\Steam. Later I realized that SteamVR for some reason is still using D:\Steam\config to store configuration files and when I disconnect the D drive, SteamVR doesn't work. This is completely messed up. I tried reinstaling SteamVR and Vive Setup, I've also tried deleting all Steam's registry entries, but that does nothing, SteamVR is still is using D: drive for config. Now I can't throw that dying drive way and if it dies completely I won't be able to use my Vive. Please help.

Go to your new SteamVR install path, and in bin\win32 run vrpathreg setthis.

I've already menaged to fix that by editing C:\Users(your user)\AppData\Local\openvr\openvrpaths.vrpath file with notepad. Thanks for the help anyway. You guys should automate this somehow in furure versions.

Got it to work by configuring all lines in vrpath file correctly, thanks. But vrpathreg.exe does not work.

It's true. vrpathreg.exe doesn't work. Still trying to solve this... will look for vrpath file (referenced by Japa).

Update: can't find the vrpath file.

Someone please respond to this with an answer.

I managed to move OpenVR to a different drive!

1. Make sure you have a Steam library on your destination drive. It sounds like you already do, but this step is for someone else who might find these instructions. To do this, just use Steam to install any game to your target drive, and it will create a Steam directory there with SteamApps.

2. Quit SteamVR and Steam. To make sure SteamVR isn't running, it might help to unplug your Vive/Oculus, make sure Steam doesn't run at startup, and reboot.

3. Move the OpenVR directory from Steam\SteamApps\common of your old drive into Steam\SteamApps\common on the new drive.

4. Move appmanifest_250820.acf from Steam\SteamApps of your old drive to Steam\SteamApps on the new drive. Make sure you don't leave a copy on the old drive!

5. Press Windows-R and run this: notepad "%APPDATA%\..\Local\OpenVR\openvrpaths.vrpath"

6. Change both lines under "runtime" to point to your new drive's OpenVR path.

Worked for me! Now SteamVR starts quickly from my SSD.

Damn, there should be an automatic option to install SteamVR elsewhere. So basic thing and Valve has done nothing :\

If anybody still have this issue.
There is an option now. Just install normally (without choosing your drive). After it is done, right click "SteamVR" and click "properties". Go to "local files" and the last one should say something like "move your installation". :)

Thanks a lot for this! :]

Yeah thanks, this was helpful. I found it was easier just to fix the paths in the C:\Users(your user)\AppData\Local\openvr\openvrpaths.vrpath file and deleting the log directories that exist there, and rebooting steam. Then new logs were being made in the main directory where steam is installed. (as that is where I set the new paths)

I realize this might be harder if you've already removed your drive, at which I'd suggest making a fake D: or E: etc, from a memory stick or using software to bind a HD path to a temp folder on C:

I don't really understand what to do here, sorry, i'm not that high tech. I want to move my steamvr so it opens from my D drive instead of my C drive

OMG just uninstall your steam from C drive, and reinstall on drive you want.

So when I first tried to use the "move your installation" in properties, it didn't work - said something about "program running", even though I had closed SteamVR.

I restarted steam, and got the same error, but after googling and finding this thread, I tried it once again just in case... and it worked. So if not working for you, maybe try again a few times in case it randomly decides to cooperate?

(as to the last comment about not enough space to install -- I think you'll need to delete something first. As far as I can tell, you have to install it in the place it automatically picks first, before you can use the "move installation" option.)
