Headset Firmware always fails to update! SteamVR won't work!
Ever since I got my Vive Pre headset it never accepted to update my headset's firmware! Update always fails. Tried everything, unplugging, uninstalling steamVR! EVERYTHING!
It wasn't a problem before because SteamVR ran anyway! But now SteamVR won't launch unless I update the firmware! HELP PLEASE! THANKS!

Are you getting a popup message for firmware updates as soon as you launch SteamVR? (The window will say something about restoring your hardware to a working state.) If so, when you click Ok, the next window will display the name of the firmware being updated. What does it say?

Nope, just says that the headset's firmware needs an update. Once I open SteamVR yes. When I hit Ok! It says updating headset's firmware (display update 1/2). Something similar to that. After a while it fails! And keeps failing if I hit retry!

Try this procedure.

1. With SteamVR closed, right click on SteamVR in your library, select Properties -> Local Files -> Verify integrity of tool cache.
2. Unplug the USB and power cables from the headset side (orange side) of the interface box.
3. Press and hold the button on the left side of the headset.
4. While holding the button, plug both cables back in.
5. Continue to hold the button for 10 seconds, then release it.
6. Launch SteamVR and follow the prompts for a recovery update.

Thanks! That didn't work! But led in the right direction. The main issue apparently was with the usb 3.0 port. Switching to another 2.0 port made it install some drivers that were missing and then updateing the firmware worked!

Just wanted to say thanks bigcheese, if you ever look at this again. Just got a Vive and it wouldn't update the headset. Turns out I was doing the same as you, had it plugged into a 3.0 port. As soon as I switched to a 2.0 port everything was fine. So thanks for porting your solution buddy. 👍

My 5 coins. Faced with the same problem. Solved by switching to USB 2.0 and removing Asus motherboard tools and MSI gaming tools.

Thanks a lot for this! Was facing the same issue with my vive but switching to USB 2.0 allowed me to update the firmware :steamhappy:
