VR View FPS Bug
so i noticed recently while streaming that my VR View was transmitting my headset view at a lower framerate than what i was seeing in the headset, so i decided to ask reddit about this after much MUCH troubleshooting.

what i learned that it started sometime after march 8th, 2020, and it seems to be affecting any VR View, including the OVR PLugin for streaming, EXCEPT the native game window, which is running at full fps of what you are seeing.

here are some videos someone on reddit did in reply to my thread:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcLJ5hy5dkw

this person eventually ended up doing more digging and found that this only happens for the game itself, NOT any overlays to may have, like the steamdashboard or OVR, proof here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-S7tAwHXaw

with that being said i think this maybe a bug or maybe something a patch did by accident or was done without letting people know.

i also noticed this is running on just more than my headset, it seems to be affecting many with WMR, Oculus and Vive, (and all their varients)

here is the reddit thread for more details.

Same issues in the new beta for WMR
Tiger Johnson Jan 14, 2021 @ 3:12pm
confirming no change with new betas. still broken
EDIT: I realized this was for VR view on the desktop, not the HMD. My fix was for the HMD dropping frames/lagging but might be relevant to anyone else having the issue so I'll leave it up.

I found a 'potential' workaround that works for me but might not for you. I hope it does.

My specs:
  • Windows 10
  • Intel 4790k (base clock)
  • RTX 2070 Super (driver version 461.09)
  • 24GB RAM
  • Steam VR Beta 1.16.1
  • 1x 4k60 monitor (Chrome, MSI Afterburner, other random windows but no games)
  • 1x 1080p 144hz monitor DUPLICATED to a 1080p60 tv (this one shows Beatsaber for everyone else to watch whoever is playing)
  • original HTC Vive HMD
When I would show the performance graph while in Beat Saber, it had a sinusoidal graph of lag, no lag, lag, no lag. During the lag, it would drop frames and was generally unplayable as a result. https://i.imgur.com/5Dy5Plv.png

RESOLUTION:
The lag all stopped when I put the mirrored view on the monitor/TV in WINDOWED mode. As soon as it went to windowed, frame dropping disappeared entirely and the performance graph looked totally normal

If you're capturing the game for streaming/video editing, try running it in windowed (if only there was borderless) and recording the window. It may not be pretty since you could end up losing a few pixels if the window doesn't fit on your monitor entirely but at least it will be smooth.

Hey guys, I am the person who got the official response from steam support. I made a reddit post about it and found out it was referenced here. Ive been searching everywhere and couldn't find a fix. Have you guys come up with anything recently? I am using a quest 2 with link running @ 90hz
Dart Frog Feb 10, 2021 @ 2:49pm
if you're using the quest 2 then you can just use the oculus mirror app (should be in C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-diagnostics), it doesn't quite have the FOV of the 2-eyes-combined mode of SteamVR mirror, but it does the job! If you're annoyed by the black borders around the edges when you move your head, try messing around with the settings a bit (I believe it was "fov stencil" that did it)
GunnrMan Feb 10, 2021 @ 5:52pm
Yeah I used to mess around with it, but I just wanted to know if you guys found a solution. But thanks anyway :) Oh yeah, and do you know any ways to get both eyes from oculus mirror and stitch them together? Last time I used it months ago it had a both eyes option but in the middle there was this visible line that seperated both eye views. Why is it so hard to get both eye outputs for vr games? Why not add the option for those who have the hardware to handle it? It seems so simple yet no one does it. The only game I know that does this for the most part is Boneworks with the action cam and center output view
Dart Frog Feb 11, 2021 @ 1:48am
yeah honestly I'd assume it's easier for the game developers to add an option with higher FOV desktop mirror, I love how many camera options the Vivecraft mod for Minecraft adds for example!
GunnrMan Feb 11, 2021 @ 9:06am
Oh it has more camera options now? I havent played it in so long, time to try it again i guess
Dart Frog Feb 11, 2021 @ 3:59pm
ye vivecraft is really nice right now, the only problem really is that it's extremely CPU heavy
SpicyWolf Feb 13, 2021 @ 11:02pm
I'm recording Pavlov with quest 2 and Virtual Desktop. Both OBS openvr capture and steamvr display vr view gives terrible fps, but the screen projection looks find. However, the projection is only left eye and I need right eye view for the aim-down-sight angle. I hope there will be a fix soon.

Same issue here. fps in the vr view is horrible, while being perfectly fine in game and according to fpsvr.

Bump, we need a fix!!

In my case I fixed it using 1.10.20 steamvr version and goes with good fps. it's the last version that works correctly. a bit outdated, but it works with quest with alvr or Virtual desktop

How? continue reading.

1. First, disable automatic steamVR updates (in steam library, search for steamvr, properties, update only when started)

2. Then get this file. remove the spaces: https ://mega. nz/file/VFQiRBAQ#-DPLGaxuzcT0gYwmmYPIN6_8QRJwumsboMyKSDMLKdI

3. Extract the rar.

4. You have to replace the steamvr folder found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\steamvr

5. Replace the appmanifest file found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps

6. Then, start steamvr from:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SteamVR\bin\win32\vrstartup.exe

ATTENTION: DO NOT START STEAMVR FROM STEAM, VRDESKTOP OR ALVR SERVER. THIS WILL UPDATE THE SYSTEM AND DESTROY WHAT YOU JUST DID. Just create a shortcut in your desktop.

1.10.20v could not be compatible with some devices. just try.

How does this version run? I'll consider using only if its nearly identical to the current version. Cus id rather not have a buggier version with less features then the current one. I own a Quest 2 headset. What is your experience with this version?
Darkest Dragon Feb 26, 2021 @ 3:49am
Come on Valve, we REALLY need improved recording options for non-Index HMDs.
It's been over a year since this issue was introduced by one of your updates. :/
Dart Frog Feb 26, 2021 @ 3:58am
well for Oculus there is Oculus Mirror, so really it's mainly WMR rn that has the problem
