SteamVR

SteamVR

Are these SteamVR or valve index VR issues tied to AMD graphics drivers?
So i'm new to Virtual Reality, and I just got my Valve Index VR a week ago. I'm using an AMD graphics driver. And lets just say my experience has been kind of quirky to say the least.

I've been running into multiple strange findings. I will list them here.

1. SteamVR says drivers need an update for every device I plug into, I press continue, it closes steam and steamVR, steam comes back, then I open steamVR again and nothing happened (still says there's another update for each device). I check my graphics driver, and there's no updates for it.

(1) SOLUTION: go to the 3 bars, press create system report, close it, then run driver updates for the connected devices. A user interface showing step processes should appear.

2. The Index VR HeadSet is having weird graphical stutters everytime I rotate my head with it, only appears to be rotation and not when im moving left and right. On top of that, my FPS is deviating around 30 and briefly 90. None of these effects are showing on my display monitor though with the game hosted on it. This seems to have occured after my AMD graphics driver was updated to it's latest version.

(2) SOLUTION: Fixed via updating the drivers for the index VR headset.

3. This im not having a problem with now, but was with the previous update for any other user's knowledge. Before, randomly, the HDMI would suddenly begin disconnecting after switching out or into exclusive fullscreen mode applications. This started happening right after I began using the VR set, and continued even after I unplugged everything. An AMD driver update seemed to fix it.

I also notice that AMD doesn't even have Valve Index listed as an option to tune the game in accordance to a type of VR set, which might explain everything, but i've never had too direct of an answer.

Index (or any SteamVR native headset for that) should work without any driver tuning required.

Having less FPS in the VR headset than on flatscreen is normal and intended, SteamVR as a scheduler tries to keep the timing as low as possible to avoid / reduce motion sickness.

That being said, it is worth noting that 24.12.1 specifically had people complaining about stutters with the Index specifically, which was fixed by running it in 120hz/144hz mode. I haven't tried the optional 25.1.1 driver yet.

If the system report does not work for you, try the test branch version which should not need the workaround to begin with, but updating controllers there might prove tricky.
