Pico 4 Enterprise stops stuttering when inside of Steam VR overlay
The headset has frequent stutters in most games as soon as I got below 60 fps (from 72). Those stutters, while frequent, are interrupted by smooth framerates.
When I am in the Steam VR overlay, the stuttering completely stops for some reason. The performance graph shows that my frametime went down (so there is less of a load). The ingame FPS stays unchanged, however.
I have played around with all of the settings in SteamVR. I am sure that it is not because SteamVR lowers the resolution or whatever when going into the Overlay mode. I can bring it up and the image looks exactly the same, except that the stutters are gone. Mind you, the framerate as I perceive it is not any better now. It is just evenly distributed. So a low framerate will stay low. It just doesn't stutter anymore.

For example, at 40 fps I would have stutters of two images that switch between one another that last around one full second. Those stutters happen ever 1-3 seconds. Nearly unplayable. When I bring up the SteamVR overlay, I can see that the image is having some mild trouble keeping up at the edges of my vision, but there are no stutters anymore.

I also own a Valve Index. The Valve Index behaves like it is in SteamVR Overlay all the time. It rarely, if ever, stutters.

I would expect performance to get worse when I bring up an overlay on top of a game that does not pause from bringing up the overlay.

What is going on? How can make it so that it is like in the overlay all the time?

Big thanks to whoever can help me. I have been having trouble with this for a long time and no amount of googling has helped me so far.

These stutters i get since Steam was updated to 2.0 in Octobre 2023. And my only fix is to use an older version which is providing Steam 1.xxx. You can try by using the Beta temp_1.27.5. Sometimes it will still stutter but the most games will run fine.

Thank you for the suggestion. I have not tried that before. Unfortunately, this did not change anything either. I also tried the Beta branch, but also nothing.

I own a Pico 4 Ultra and only the the Beta temp_1.27.5 fixes the stutters.
When the Steam_Overlay stops the stutter it is a problem inside Steam, i guess.
I would test the Betas of the Steamclient for testing.

Which kind of hardware is built in your PC or Laptop ?
