Computer Freezes on SteamVR Exit
So I just recently got a cosmos elite. I tried the vive console from the website as well as on here but every time I close steamvr or the console after playing vr, my whole computer freezes. Once my pc freezes I can hear the coil whine from my gpu and its really loud.

I have managed to figure out that if I turn my monitor on and off when it freezes it fixes it without having to restart my pc. But I do not want to keep doing that.

My PC :
7800x3D
32gb Ram
RTX 3080 12gb

For monitors I have one 144hz ultrawide and a 1080p secondary monitor. I am also on windows 11 pro.

I have tried :
steamvr beta
vive console beta
removing usb devices via steamvr
reinstalling steamvr
reinstalling the vive console
plugging the cosmos into different ports on my gpu and motherboard
I have also moved steam itself to a different drive as well as the console which did nothing

I think thats it? If someone could please help me out that would be great, Im loosing my mind over here.

If it helps at all, I found this in event viewer under windows applications. This happens every time after I close steamvr or the console. Its the same errors every time.

I have the same problem since yesterday. The strange part is that it didn't do it before, except I was hearing that strange coil whine for a brief second or so right after I close steamvr which was weird but didn't bothered me so mutch but now this freeze does.
I am on win11 pro too and have the same cpu, 7800x3d and 32gb ram, but using a different gpu: 4070ti with an oculus quest.
Did you find a solution?

on the plus side I am not entirely sure if the coil whine is coming from the gpu. My other guess is the motherboard. I have an MSI PRO X670-P WIFI.

I haven’t found a solution yet unfortunately. I sent my gpu in for repair and I’m waiting for that to be returned in hopes that was the issue. I also have a rx 580 I’m going to test on sometime either this weekend or on Monday. I can let you know if that changes anything.

My gpu actually started artifacting so I’m a bit worried my gpu just popped one day and the crashing started. Hopefully that’s not the case. But once I get my gpu back if it works again that’s all I can assume it was.

apparently this has been an issue for years not a new thing. Closing SteamVR locks up the whole computer until it can ♥♥♥♥♥♥ itself had it lock up my PC for near 5min one time.

There's a post on here I read a few hours ago from a Dev explaining why it does this and that it WILL be fixed soon. For now though, you can opt into the Steam Beta to make it stop. Instead of freezing, it will simply refresh Steam. No more hanging/freezing/hitching. I used to experience that as well and would instantly become irritated lol.

Edit: Well, IDK if buddy is a Dev or not but here.

Still not fixed :(

This took a lot of troubleshooting on my end to figure out the issue. Originally the display and the VR were conflicting because of HDR. So I then turned HDR off and that stopped my freezing all together and it worked perfect... So long as HDR was off.

However this has just come back and it doesn't matter if HDR is on or off.

To resolve it with out resetting the PC I have to turn off the VR Base then my monitor is responsive again.

joining in on the fun with an og vive and a cosmos elite, a 3600x and a 3080, for the past ~year it was only a second or a half but now it locks up for half a minuite or more, ramping up the gpu usage to 100+%.
For me just ending the steam background task from task manager instead of closing it normally bypasses the freezing part, without understanding the damages it may cause.
Also i am still using win10, an ultawide 120hz and a 1080p60 vertically

I feel like I’m having the same issue. Just now I exited SteamVR and it froze my screen and my card started whining like crazy. I have a Quest 2, though

same problem after playing half life Alyx and then closing SteamVR. Computer freezes and goes full power, so I have to restart it until it literally explode....

Having this issue as well. I close a game, shut off the headset but if i exit SteamVR using my pc instead of headset, it freezes the pc to oblivion and requires me to use the button reset on the case. Dunno how to fix it even with HAGS disabled.

add me to this list. Ryzen 5 3600, RTX 2060 32GB DDR3 Windows 11 Pro and a week old Quest 3.

Whole computer freezes up after exiting SteamVR apps pretty much every time. Can move the mouse about, but clicking on things does nothing, no response from keyboard. If I leave it alone long enough it just crashes everything completely. Regardless, I have to hard reboot my PC every time. It never recovers on its own.

Doesn't matter if it's airlink or tethered.

No such issues with any other PCVR app I've tried so far.

Even steam link for regular 2D game streaming has always been crap for me, whereas 'Moonlight Game Streaming' runs just fine and at a higher resolution with the exact same hardware.

e.g Doom Eternal will look like it is 720p and have bad input lag and look awful even if it's ethernet all the way. Yet Moonlight will stream it no problems at 1080p with the settings cranked up, regardless of the device I am streaming it to using ethernet from my PC to the router then wifi to the next device. Moonlight even works streaming to my damn several years old Android Phone.

Every time I use any kind of Steam based streaming it has been trash.

Time to go look for ways to play my Steam VR games without Steam I guess.
I'll die of old age waiting for Steam and their "We're gonna fix it soons"

It does this to me all the time so I left it frozen to see what it would do and after 2 minutes it threw up a steam vr has encountered a critical error box and everything went back to normal. I hope it gets fixed soon
