Valve Index.. Camera communication failed
Hello!

I can not get the Valve Index camera to work... :-(
The test always shows camera communication failed.

System:
Ryzen 3900X
ASUS Crosshair VIII Hero
ASUS RTX 2080 TI
32 GB DDR 4

Have tried all the USB ports and enabled @ windows 10 that apps can use cameras.
Firmwares are all up to date.

Thank you

I fixed this by using a USC c adapter that came with my phone (pixel 5), I plugged it in and camera driver appeared, now its working on other ports :). Figured I'd chime in since I was having issues on windows 11. Mobo ; Asus ROG STRIX B550 gaming WiFi.

I have the same basic issue that in SteamVR, the camera is not accessible. However, I do get a stereoscopic picture in the Windows camera app, which to me means the camera as such is working on my USB port. I don't get why Valve's own software is then not capable to access the camera (which I also allowed this in the privacy settings).

Does anyone else have this situation (camera works in windows app, but not in SteamVR)? Getting another USB card seems strange because the camera as such is working, right?

What is the solution for this particular case?

Only solution I could get would be to restart and try again. It usually works but is you know not ideal and a pain in the ass.

I was suffering from the same issue (the test giving me that error) and tried most of the suggested solutions.
I tried running the W10 Camera App but it said that another app is already using it - 0xA00F4243<CameraReservedByAnotherApp> (0xC00D3704).
I tried finding which process was using it, without success (now I see there are smarter[www.thewindowsclub.com] ways[www.winhelponline.com]). So I decided to just block the access to the camera - in the W10 Privacy -> Camera there's a list of apps that can access the camera. I just switched all of them off except for the "Camera" App. Then the app worked fine, the test in SteamVR passed, all issues disappeared.
I hope that helps someone in the same situation (apparently there are many different potential causes for this behavior, just sharing my case).
worked for me
