Valve Index.. Camera communication failed
Hello!

I can not get the Valve Index camera to work... :-(
The test always shows camera communication failed.

System:
Ryzen 3900X
ASUS Crosshair VIII Hero
ASUS RTX 2080 TI
32 GB DDR 4

Have tried all the USB ports and enabled @ windows 10 that apps can use cameras.
Firmwares are all up to date.

Thank you

I had the same issue with my Valve Index but managed to solve it:

I tried without success methods suggested here and elsewhere on the web: changing USB ports, removing the Steam VR configuration and reinstalling, changing the Windows 10 privacy settings... I also read that Asus motherboards had trouble with it, and since I have an Asus motherboard with an AMD Ryzen CPU, the last thing to try was to add a USB controller.

So in the end I purchased and installed a USB 3 controller (PEXUSB312A2) even though my motherboard has plenty of those. I switched the USB cable of the Valve Index onto it, rebooted, and the issue was solved, I can now use the camera functionality.

Same boat here. Camera failing to communicate. It's just weird. I can literally use the win10 camera and see through the camera, but it wont work through steamVR. I disabled all the permissions as was suggested and still wont work. I'm also seeing that device in device manager with the descriptor request failing (not really sure if it is related)

I also have a Asus Motherboard (Asus P9X79) and I'm hoping its not the issue but seemingly it is based on what everyone is saying. I'll give it a shot with a usb controller as well once I determine what to actually get and if I have the space on the motherboard. Suggestions appreciated.

Having the same issue here, you think an external usb 3 hub/controller would work aswell? Not really that comfortable installing hardware in my pc..

If you encounter the issue on a USB port, adding a USB-hub on top of it will most likely not change anything. It is however very easy to install a PCI card on a desktop computer : just power it down, plug the card in, add one screw to lock it in place, then power up the pc and you're done.
If you are paranoid, you can take care to discharge yourself from static electricity first, but just touching your computer case should take care of that. The card I used can optionaly be powered by an external power supply, but I dit not even bother to use it because the Index has it's own power supply.

If you have a laptop however, fat chance... You cannot add PCI cards on them.

I feel like Valve should mention the fact that a lot of motherboards are not compatible with the Index, it's kind of annoying

I had the same error (camera communication failed). My Motherboard is an EVGA X58 FTW³ and the cameras did work in the Windows Camera App but not in VR...
I just plugged the USB-Cable into my PCIe USB Card (gladly, I have one already) and now it's working fine :)

Thanks for the help guys!

I have the same issue.
Did you try to use the camera with the Windows 10 camera app? Mine flickers weirdly: https://imgur.com/a/QtBzOHD

i have exactly the same thing with the camera flicker when using windows camera, is that a hardware issue?

I resolved it by using a PCI-Express USB 3.0 controller by Innateck. Today ,I have a new motherboard that also works.

i have a VR ready 3.2 usb on my mobo... X470 GAMING PLUS MAX, that's so strange...

Edit: i changed the USB from the VR ready to a normal 3.2 and it works xD, and by works i mean no flicker, still have the communication failed error

Edit 2: for no reason at all today the camera works... don't know what to say, haven't done anything than changing the USB (that did nothing yesterday), not gonna complain, hope it keeps on working

I have tried all solutions in this thread with the exception of a new USB card, the Valve Index cameras work perfectly fine in the Win10 Camera app, but not out of SteamVR. Having to buy a new PCI card just for this does not sit right with me.

Edit: Nevermind, I still get "Camera communication failed" from the camera test, but the "translucent ghost" camera feature works perfectly fine.

I was suffering from the same issue (the test giving me that error) and tried most of the suggested solutions.
I tried running the W10 Camera App but it said that another app is already using it - 0xA00F4243<CameraReservedByAnotherApp> (0xC00D3704).
I tried finding which process was using it, without success (now I see there are smarter[www.thewindowsclub.com] ways[www.winhelponline.com]). So I decided to just block the access to the camera - in the W10 Privacy -> Camera there's a list of apps that can access the camera. I just switched all of them off except for the "Camera" App. Then the app worked fine, the test in SteamVR passed, all issues disappeared.
I hope that helps someone in the same situation (apparently there are many different potential causes for this behavior, just sharing my case).

You are my damn hero this is the only thing that has worked so far that fixed my camera not working thanks a million

This may be an old thread, but here is a good solution that worked for me:

1. Go to Device Manager
2. Click the drop down arrow next to the Cameras section
3. Right click on eTronVideo and click properties
4. If its disabled by Windows, there should be an option to enable it on the
first window you see

After that, it worked perfectly for me
Hope this helps anyone in 2020 having the same issue!

My Cameras war working but then they have stopped. I think it may have something to do with the firmware, I could be wrong.
Michael6000000 2021 年 3 月 16 日 上午 12:26
I found Out that they are working. thought SteamVR seems to think that it is not working, how come.
Michael6000000 2021 年 3 月 16 日 上午 12:37
Yes I fixed the cameras, it is working. It turns out that I just needed to reboot the head set.
