Valve Index.. Camera communication failed
Hello!

I can not get the Valve Index camera to work... :-(
The test always shows camera communication failed.

System:
Ryzen 3900X
ASUS Crosshair VIII Hero
ASUS RTX 2080 TI
32 GB DDR 4

Have tried all the USB ports and enabled @ windows 10 that apps can use cameras.
Firmwares are all up to date.

Thank you

I have the same issue.
Did you try to use the camera with the Windows 10 camera app? Mine flickers weirdly: https://imgur.com/a/QtBzOHD

I had the same thing, but I opened the window 10 camera app while trying to test the camera in steam settings and it suddenly started to work.

It sometimes randomly works when starting VR for me.

Same issue here

Same issue here. I've tried changing app permissions, opening win10 camera app, editing the default.vrsettings file and nothing seems to fix the problem.

I've seen some people say that it needs usb2.0, others say usb3.0, but i don't have either, only usb3.1(2 with DAC support and the rest normal).

I just found this in device manager, I deleted it and it reappeared after running Test camera and performance in settings:

I got this response from steam support which resolved the problem for me:

You'll need to have both the headset and monitor connected to the same dedicated GPU for SteamVR to function correctly. Try connecting the headset to other ports on the machine. We also suggest removing any USB hubs or display adapters which may interfere.

Resetting your USB devices may help correct the issue you're experiencing. Please try the following troubleshooting steps:
Start SteamVR > Developer > Developer Settings.
Disconnect both HMD connections from the PC and the power cable
Click "Remove All SteamVR USB Devices" and wait for confirmation
Reboot the PC
Launch the Steam Client
Reconnect the headset
Wait for the device installation to finish
Start SteamVR and wait for a status window to pop up with device installation messages

Relatively certain i tried that a while back.
I'll give it another try.

Finally had a chance to remove all usb devices and reboot.
At first, it made things worse. My machine was freezing every time i started the SteamVR app.
That is finally fixed, i'm not sure how.

But the camera is still having the same problem. Camera Communication Failed

The only thing that worked for me was getting an USB 3.0 PCI-Express card by Inateck. Other cards with different chipsets did not work. Quite annoying...

I was suffering from the same issue (the test giving me that error) and tried most of the suggested solutions.
I tried running the W10 Camera App but it said that another app is already using it - 0xA00F4243<CameraReservedByAnotherApp> (0xC00D3704).
I tried finding which process was using it, without success (now I see there are smarter[www.thewindowsclub.com] ways[www.winhelponline.com]). So I decided to just block the access to the camera - in the W10 Privacy -> Camera there's a list of apps that can access the camera. I just switched all of them off except for the "Camera" App. Then the app worked fine, the test in SteamVR passed, all issues disappeared.
I hope that helps someone in the same situation (apparently there are many different potential causes for this behavior, just sharing my case).

Apparently ASUS mobos don't play well with VR HMDs, it's the USB chipset they use. I bought an external USB 3.1 card, will be trying that tomorrow.

Turning off the windows 10 camera app worked for me.
