SteamVR
4 finger tracking mode for index controllers.
Hi!

Where might be the best place to suggest a feature to the team working on the Index Controllers?

I have large hands and as a result my Index Controllers are pretty terrible at detecting my fourth and pinkie fingers because the way I have to hold the controller, my pinkie falls underneath my fourth finger.

I work as an animator and one thing you observe pretty early on when rigging and animating characters is that the pinkie finger almost always moves with the fourth finger. With this in mind I'd love it if we could have an optional mode for people like me which makes the index and fourth fingers move and track together rather than as separate digits, that way we can have natural, non-glitchy hand tracking :)

Other than that they are great controllers :)

Cheers!

Just interested, just how big hands do you got if your ring finger and pinky end up on top of each other? I have large hands, using the boosters to make the top inputs comfortable at all, but I can still fit all my fingers on the handle and have them move 🤣

Can even squeeze my index finger in there, moving it off the trigger, but that's not comfortable. Are you requesting the ability for the curl sensors to detect four fingers when doing this?

Hiya!

It's actually not that I can't fit them on the grip, it's more that all my individual fingers don't lay side-by-side on the grip due to the way it sits in my palm, at least without forcing it and suffering some discomfort. It's difficult to explain but it's less about how much room there is and more about how my fingers naturally grip the control. The result ends up being that it can't differentiate between my fourth finger and pinky because my pinky ends up resting too far up the grip. It would have been better if there was an offset at the bottom of the strap, the same as there is at the top (the different settings) as I think it would be fine if I could move the bottom of the strap into a different position. Alas I don't think a hardware change is viable so was hoping for a software solution :)

My hands just barely fits inside the strap, and for the controllers to be anywhere close to comfortable to use with the top input I have to use the boosters, see this post.

Things I have seen people do, is re-route the elastic strap so it goes around the tracking arch and then through the retainer. Could not find a reference for this straight away though, and I have not tried that myself yet.

Oooohhh! THOSE boosters :D Never heard of them before - that's awesome! I'll give them a try, thanks :)

The idea of re-threading the strap sounds like a good idea too. Cheers for your help :)
