SteamVR

Looking to Replace my Oculus Rift
My old rift setup is breaking and falling apart.

I'm looking to find a new vr setup to play my VR games on steam. But I really don't want to make new accounts just to use the software or give facebook money, and I don't want to pay 1k to get a Valve Index or HTC Vive.

Is it too much of a stretch to ask if I can look for cheaper alternatives? Are there any reputable competitors that make VR setups that can be used by SteamVR?

I'm in a similar situation to you, I have a rift cv1.
The degree of wear is very high, but I love these goggles.

I don't see a good alternative, the relegation to SLAM tracking, which is becoming more and more popular, is something that would be very hard for me to agree to.

Charging the battery after 2 hours is a joke.

I have some hopes that ps vr2 will be available this year for pc vr but the announcements were vague, maybe a ps console will be required or buying games from the sony store.

The second hope is dekard, maybe my goggles will last until the premiere.

The index is not optimal for me, it's not even about the price, I'm worried about the durability of the lantern, the charged controllers are something completely not for me.
I only use the graphics card for vr games, and I would also have to buy a more powerful card, or maybe the whole computer, it increases the price vr significantly.

I.e. stays on cv1 until it stops working, or ps vr2 / decard.

It's not even a cosemetic wear and tear. The headset's straps are breaking at the joints, the control sticks are drifiting; badly.

Mine are saved with electrical duct tape.
You can clean the buttons and sticks with a hard brush. You remove human skin mixed with fat, I do it when something starts to work worse (every two years). I wash the controllers with IPA (isopropylene alcochol).

I downplayed the joint breaking. It''s completely broken off the left side of the headset on one side. And I've used duct tape, but the tape is blocking the headset from being seen by the sensors.

Well, it's better to react early than when something breaks completely.
I have no idea what and how you glued, but there are no IR LEDs on the strips.

There are also no cables on the left side.
Unless you're talking about the right side (with the goggles on your head).
There goes the ribbon for the left and right earphones and the LEDs on the back of the strap.
But I broke the ribbon once, and the tracking with three sensors is so good that I didn't notice a difference in the tracking performance.

No, it is left.

Also, I forgot to mention that the goggles have terrible adhesive surface. So it was a miracle the duct tape worked at all.

It's not a question of surface. It's about the heat your head produces. But most of all, it's about the fat and salt in the sweat. No glue can withstand this. You have to do it very cleverly. On the back of the strap, even a 3m tape for mounting phone screens does not hold up in the long run.
These headbands should have been produced with the possibility of easy replacement, but at the time no one knew about it. In my opinion, it is still a great feat that it can withstand thousands of hours of use, removal and putting on.
Let's also not forget that initially the goggles were produced with the idea of working with a single lantern. And there were no vr controllers back then.
