Valve index passthrough 2d mode is low quality image
I'm trying to use the passthrough mode using my valve index. The quality makes it quite hard to use. I'm cannot see the letters on my keyboard clearly and makes it quite tough to use.

any suggestions on how to improve the camera quality. When i look at the vr view through desktop it seems clear but with the headset I cannot see the letters on my keyboard

The Index cameras have pretty low resolution. You can help the quality a bit by having more light in the room, but it's still very much limited by the camera resolution.

Why does the tv/monitor im using showing the vr view have a much clearer view of the keys than with the headset? Both images are coming from the cameras, just different display used tv vs headset to display the VR view are drastically different.

Does not seem like a camera issue if the VR view on the computer monitor can see better than the headset can.

That's not supposed to happen. Maybe SteamVR is rendering its UI at a lower resolution. What is your Settings -> Video -> Overlay Render Quality option set to? (You need to set Advanced Settings to Show to see it).
It was set to high. (the default) So I set it to low as a test and restarted the vr and no changes. Set back to high for now

Not sure what it could be then. Can you take images of the difference?
So I attempted to do this and found something. When I take my phone camera and place it in front of one of the vr lenses its clear. But using both lenses using my eyes makes it blurry(side note I do have 20/20 vision and do not require glasses). I will not be able to take a photo of the issue using my phone due to this. Since I can only use my camera on my phone to take a pic of one lens at a time and does not re-produce the issue in this way.

IT seems like the issue is one camera is streaming to one lens and the other camera the other lens and combining those images results in the blurry low res result.

Intresting. I've noticed that the camera projection for the Index in Room View has some weird inaccuracies (that I've partially managed to correct in my own software). It might be that the incorrect projection is tricking your eyes to focus at the wrong distance.
Any suggestions? Hopefully the steam index team can comment on our discussion.

Thank you for contributing, I appreciate it !
To add to this. In testing I moved the lenses closer together and I did notice an improvement in the view,(and the blur get worse when moved apart). But still unusable at this point. Hopefully this info might help

If you want to try out my implementation, it is an OpenXR API layer that lets you composite passthough onto any VR app as long as it's using OpenXR (most new ones).

Installed. But not seeing the settings button on bottom left of steam vr dashboard. C++ redis is installed.

Ideas for what I can do to see the settings option and confirm it is working properly

I can see open xr settings in the VR settings if I go through the windows UI. but I dont see any option via inside the VR dashboard

The layer only runs when you have a game or app that uses OpenXR open. Open Brush is an easy one to test with.
