SteamVR

SteamVR

43k players in VR chat right now
I always hear that VR isnt a lucrative market, and most games barely break 1000 players. First person shooters (imo the best use of VR) barely break 500. It makes no sense to me that shooters are so low.

I decided to check steam charts for all VR games, and vr chat regularly has tens of thousands of players. WHAT.

What draws people to this? What are other VR games missing that vr chat has?

Can we talk about this?

Interesting question. Will take a look to the answers.

ok so there are some layers to this AND also information you are probally missing.

1. free to play player numbers are not comparable to pay to play games, that is the biggest factor by far.

2. VRchat is one of the oldest VR games on steam, it was available even before any actual popular VR headsets existed.

3. it is one of the few options for 3D VTUBERS to exist in the first place, with full body tracking support and ability to create custom 3D models

4. for some reason a lot of gen Z and even gen alpha is getting into VR ever since the quest headsets launched (especially since the quest 2 and quest 3)
Understandable, however there is not even one VR game that comes even remotely close to 40k. The highest grossing VR game otherwise is GORILLA TAG LOL (1800 players)

The only other game to peak close is HL Alyx, but that's just a single peak.

It just seems so crazy to me that a game where you stand around and talk attracts more players than actual games. Its just mindblowing

those are not the total numbers for gorilla tag.

most of the players for that are on the standalone quest headset version

That isnt really relevant is it? If theres 40k people on steamvr VR chat, and nobody else on the other steam games, theres got to be some kind of reason. Something is drawing people to VR chat that other games cant seem to grasp. i want to see vr grow, but it seems nobody cares about VR FPS games and its strange, considerinf they are some of the most popular flat screen games

its free, it has full body tracking, it has custom player made models, its one of the few VR games that was around during the 2020 quarantine days... i could go on but those are some of the biggest factors.

Ghosts of tabor is my favorite VR shooter. Tarkov in VR. Its really hard but I love it.

Pavlov and contractors are great for mods. Me and my GF play a lot of call of duty zombies in there. I also recommend left4dead2 vr mod. Its kind of janky, and you need to support it with workshop mods, but it is incredible
VRChat isn't VR only.
It's played best with a headset, but you can just use mouse and keyboard if you don't want to buy one and still want to hang out with people all over the world for free.

Interesting. I wonder what percentage is in vr
Yeah if you go to a PC only lobby most players don't even have VR.
Look up collections for vr in the workshop. Tons of good ones!

Some mods even have iron sights that work properly too!

Glad you liked it. It even works multiplayer with non VR players.

Have fun!!!

Ps, for comfort, look into the mods that remove head bobbing and blood splatter, as well as ones that force first person animations

can someone gift me gorilla tag so i can be part of the gang
I don't think you can get the full picture of the VR ecosystem without also getting quest standalone numbers. Despite (imo) pcvr being superior you can't deny that quest standalone is much cheaper. (since you don't need a decent PC to run VR)

Unfortunately I don't know of a way to grab Quest player numbers without asking the developer.

I moderate a VR game Discord server and the vast majority of players are quest users. Most of them don't even own a PC.
I wish more people understood that you dont need a supercomputer to run PCVR. One of my setups is a 3060 laptop i got for 600 dollars and it runs really good
