"vrserver.exe has stopped working"
Hi, I don't have any VR equipment, nor have I opted in to anything VR-related but every day at least once or twice I get an error pop up on my windows desktop telling me vrserver.exe has stopped working.

It doesn't bother me in the slightest, I just tracked it to Steam and thought I should report it.

I have Windows 8.1 x64, it was a Windows 8 clean install that updated to 8.1 when it was released. I have had Steam installed for the better part of a year and it is always updated to the latest. I haven't opted in to any Steam betas, I haven't used or loaded anything to do with Oculus or VR, I don't use Big Picture (sp?) but I have ran it once or twice in the past.

If this is a known thing then disregard this thread, as I said it doesn't bother me at all, but if I can help iron out any bugs I'm glad to help.

If any 'techheads' require a crash dump or hardware report just tell me what to do and where to send it :)

@nil See if you can replicate it a few times, or if it bugs you, use my fix :)

There is a new beta update for SteamVR that prevents vrserver.exe from running at all on machines where no Oculus device is detected. If you are running into problems with vrserver and are willing to test the beta we would love to hear your results.

Once this release is stabilized we'll get it pushed out to everyone and make the vrserver problems people are having go away.

@programmer Joe Nice one mate, hope it comes soon!

Hey Joe, I'm also having a problem with vserver.exe not running when I switch between direct mode and extended mode on the DK2. Even after a reboot, SteamVR will disappear from the view menu. I have to completely reinstall Steam and SteamVR to resolve the issue. Just wanted to give you a heads up on that, and noticed a few people on reddit.com/r/oculus also had a similar issue.
Programmer Joe  [desarrollador] 15 AGO 2014 a las 6:36 p. m.
@Haggler87: I'm not seeing that problem with switching from Direct to Extended. Can you post your vrserver and vrclient_steam log files from the time you made the switch? That would help me debug.

The files should be in <steaminstall>/logs.
Bumbling Old Git (UK) 17 AGO 2014 a las 1:32 a. m.
Lol never had this until today- got a stack of 30 dialogue boxes overnight. I use an oculus occasionally so would rather not uninstall. Can I switch it off until I need it?
WOOO 20 AGO 2014 a las 2:16 p. m.
Hey Joe, sorry I was out of town. I think these logs are around the time it stopped appearing. If you need me to reinstall steam again and switch between direct hmd and extended again to deactivate it let me know. Here are the logs from the 16th:

Try in the new Steam Client beta. It should show up as long as hardware is connected and will give you the reason it can't detect the hardware.

Thank you Joe, the Steam Client Beta worked. One other thing I noticed was when turning my head left and right the large SteamVR screen seems to shift a bit, as if it's trying to assist me in covering more ground. It's fairly disorienting, and just wanted to leave some feedback on that. I am not sure if there is a way to disable that or make it 1:1 with the headtracking? As in.. keeping the screen is fixed in place, or if this is just a bug. Thanks again!

@Haggler87, Does it still happen if you use the Exit Menu option to recenter the view?

Just tried center view option, it didn't seem to help.

When I turn my head to the left it feels like the screen shifts right a bit too fast, and turning right it shift left too quickly. Maybe it has something to do with the prediction being too high or low? I'm not really sure, but it feels a little off as if it's "assisting" me. (That's how I would describe it at least)

There's quite a bit of wobble of the SteamVR virtual screen when I shake the hmd while wearing it. Maybe that is related? (seems more noticeable in horizontal direction) I Haven't really noticed this issue in other virtual screen apps. Hope this all makes sense!

I am running the Rift screen only, in extended mode in oculus utility, no secondary monitors. (I usually do windows key + p and choose "secondary screen" then start steamVR with one eye)
