Are there two-player games for VR?
Hi folks,

I'm new to VR and wondering if there are any games like the old Myst game. For example going around solving puzzles. It would be interesting if it were a 2-player game.

I have all these memories of my family gathering around the old Apple Macintosh to play Myst. And we would try to solve all the puzzles together. It seems like the kind of thing in VR, I'd ask some friend across town to login and both people try to solve puzzles.

Anything like that or like Myst for VR?

Thanks.

The closest thing to Myst you'll find in VR is probably Obduction, since that was made by the people that made Myst. It's single player only, though. If you want multiplayer puzzle games, I know there are a lot of escape room VR games, some of which are multiplayer. I can't really speak to their quality though, I haven't tried any of them.

Oh I guess an escape room game sounds maybe too scary. What got me thinking of this is the game Alyx. That game reminds me of Myst during the puzzles, as well as the way you jump around is just like how we would jump around in Myst.

The other parts of Alyx are not quite as fun, the shooting the gun and scary monsters and being in the dark. It's all great for VR and extremely high quality I'm just not so much into that stuff.

But for example the puzzle where they show a little box of buttons, 4x4, and you have to figure out the answer to the puzzle by making the trash float and then the answer is shown on the far wall. That part was pretty fun and I could see myself doing those kinds of puzzles.

Thanks for the info. I might check out those escape room games.

take a look on to We Were Here serie.
Area you talking about playing on a same computer? There are games for VR where multiple persons share one headset (some of those games can be played online too). Players can either play together one player playing on VR headset and another on PC screen (asymmetric), or players can take turns (hotseat). There are multiplayers games which are co-op games or competitive and the term "party game" can contain either both categories or only the latter one. there are also games where multiple players play together from PC screen against the VR player.

Local MP games on VR are great fun, here's a list for such games: https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/wiki/multiplayer and a video review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQGRd-rzVVw There are some great puzzle games for asymmetric local co-op, like Carly and the Reaperman and Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes for example. There are quite many puzzle games in that list as puzzle games have been a popular category in VR in the first generation.

Okay maybe that is along the lines of what I was thinking. My idea was worse actually, because I thought maybe 2 people with 2 headsets in 2 different rooms in the same house. But then who has 2 rooms with headsets in the same house?

For example I've been playing Elite Dangerous and the space ship has an empty chair for like the co-pilot. But also there are puzzle games like Myst that would be fun in VR I would think.

I will check out those links. Thanks.

Not many have many PC VR set, unless they are developers (I can answer yes to both). I have one set for development and we have other set just for fun in the living room. Me and my gf don't have duplicate copies of many games (thanks to Steam familyshare), but we have some, and it has been little bit unreal to play tabletennis against each others in VR on different rooms. In would be possible (with SteamVR tracking) to do with just one play area, but that would look strange from outside. Two players facing each others, playing without visible table or ball.

There are many players though that have multiple Oculus Quest headsets in the same household and have been playing together. Especially social games are popular for that, VRChat for example.

That list has also online multiplayer games, same apartment or different. There are bunch of online MP games for VR, but puzzle is not that popular genre for online MP.
Obduction is fun from what I’ve played so far and it’s VR, but as stated not multiplayer. Alice vr is another one but as far as I know also not multiplayer, but it does seem to be more puzzle based.

I love the Myst series and still play them from time to time. There’s even a neat tool called Drizzle to import the maps from other myst games into Uru. Puzzles in the other game maps even seem to work with it, though sadly it isn’t vr.
