SteamVR

SteamVR

Oculus GO in 2020 or good phone with riftcat?
So. first - I'm not in the budget for a full on VR headset. I'm capped @ about $180 (too many other hobbies).

I've tried Riftcat/Vridge on my Moto G6, and it's almost acceptable, I'd like a little better resolution, but the gameplay itself is working for me fine - and I'm only doing sim racing games like Assetto Corsa, Raceroom, Project cars. No plans or time to expand to other types of games.

Questions, specifically is: Does the GO still work in Steam VR?

I can get a used one within my budget, but I can also get an S series galaxy phone with better resolution and just use in some VR glasses couple with V-Ridge.

Curious as to opinions of each. I'm on the fence, leaning towards just a better phone, but have a strange attraction to the GO, if it still works in Steam VR.

Thanks!

the go has had its support dropped by oculus and to my knowledge it was never a steamvr compatible headset natively. You can use it with things like riftcat and driver4vr. it is only a 3dof hmd but with d4vr and a kinect 360 or pseye camera you can turn it into a 6dof hmd. Even when only playing sim style games you really need all those little head bobs and weaves its fine if you have never had them but once you have had positional tracking its hard going back to not having it.

I think a highend phone would work pretty well provided the go didnt work at all but in the end having to get extra hardware to make it all work with a pc hmd is hard to stay under the $200 mark now and you'd almost always be better off getting a genuine pc headset.

I say get the phone because atleast if it fails to work right its still a useful/resaleble device with a higher chance to be bought then the discontinued oculus Go.

Hey try using apps like "Letgo" or "OfferUp" to find a used headset. I got an Oculus CV1 with 3 sensors for $225 last week and was talking to a guy selling a Samsung Odyssey+ that was only used 4 or so times for $200. If you are in the texas or florida area I can give you a link to the posting as that's where he bounces between.

Thanks for the responses, appreciated!

the more I think about it, the less of an option the GO really is, as far as just using it for sim racing. Great point about it not being Steam VR - I missed that. Ultimately I'd be using Riftcat/Vridge anyow - so the only diff is probably refresh rate on the GO vs a phone. My moto G6 was acceptable - not perfect - but the only thing that really pushed me away from was the lower resolution.

I'll loo in to Offer Up and Letgo, I"m in Albuquerque, but thanks for the thought on that guy! Maybe a used VR headset is an option after all.

If you can get that odyssey+ for $200 thats a steal for the value, you will save yourself so much time and trouble shooting. i use wmr on steamvr for all my games and it works great. its not an index but 90% of the experience for 20% the price is hard to beat

So, thanks again for the replies guys, appreciate the info.

I accidentally came across a Rift CV1 for 175, and purchased it straight away. Only has one sensor, but I think I can use it for sim racing that way, and if not, I can source another sensor for pretty cheap. I opted for it over the phone (even though phone technically better resolution) because its OLED and slightly higher res than my phone, so the image will be a step up either way, dedicated VR, and the 6dof.

Curious to check this out, should have it Friday. Thanks again!

You shouldnt need more than one sensor unless you plan on spinning around backwards or turning your head super far to one side for prolonged times

you will be sweet as, the cv1 originally came with 1 sensor its only needed two when the touch controls came out and a 3rd one for decent roomscale tracking. for just sim racing you are gonna have great time. welcome to the future.
