Index losing tracking when I open the menu or steam/record
Hi, over the last 6 months or so I've had an issue that I've seen repeated in a few forums with no answer. I lose tracking when I open the steam vr menu while in game. Either the screen will freeze, by the room will go flying and/or the screen will go grey then all return to normal for a second just to repeat. While it is annoying, I can play all my games with 0 issues otherwise. My task manager shows CPU usually 20-50%, Memory 30-50% and GP 30-60% even during a very intense part of a game.

All of that is fine, I can live with it. However, I wanted to stream some game play for some friends which I have done successfully before with no issues. Now I get the same issues when I stream/record that I get when I open the menu. Again, I can live with it, but its getting really annoying.

Oh and its all games, not just a certain game. I tested Blade and Sorcery, H3, Final Assault, Until You Fall.
The only hardware changes Ive had was the new graphics card, but it had this issue before the new hardware, I just didn't play vr for a few months.

Things I've tried:
-Updating graphics drivers
-Installing Beta/Previous Steam VR
-Fresh install of Steam VR
-Checking for driver updates
-Updating the headset, no other hardware requires and update
-Switching Display Ports
-Lights on/Lights off
-Covering reflective surfaces
-Unplugging and re plugging in base stations
-All connections are secure
-no obstructions
-Base stations are green
-camera is disabled
-Ive restarted my PC multiple times
-allowed windows to update :steamfacepalm:
-Its plugged into the VR READY usb port

I've read on some threads that Steam VR is just broken now for a lot of people?

GeForce RTX 3080 10GB
AMD Ryzen 7 3800X 8-Core
32GB Ram

It's going to be weird.
Power saving for this usb port / for bluetooth etc. ??
Broken controller, damaged battery (pressing the menu on the controller?) ??
Try doing this on the controller connected with the cable, to usb with good current.
Connect to another high-speed USB port, preferably on a different controller, if there is a block diagram of the motherboard, or it is described in the manual.

So, I saw an obscure reddit post where the guy mentioned a motherboard bios update and rattled off a bunch of jargon I didnt understand. But I understood Bios Update. I hadent done one in a few years so I went ahead and did that. Had some issue and had to set to default settings on the bios after the update.

Now it works. No tracking issues, some frame dropping, but in fairness I had other stuff updating in the background using up some of my CPU.

But yeah, if someone has this issue.... try updating your bios i guess?

This is a very logical solution to the problem.

This restore to default settings, after a bios update is a normal thing. You should do this whenever you update the bios, without even being asked to do so.

It's normal to need to update the motherboard bios if it's not a mature product.
For example, it has been produced for a year and comes out of the factory with a bios that has been heavily tested by consumers, improved, and the factory delivers the product with the new bios.
Or you bought a product released this month, and not all problems are known.

You can probably read what changes have been made in the patch notes.
This is probably a change in how this port, "vr ready" is handled.
But not every correction is included in the description, it depends on the manufacturer of the motherboard, some describe everything others: "Improved performance; improved security".

Your "vr ready" usb port could turn off other necessary devices to improve its own speed.

I’m currently experiencing this issue, did you find a fix for it?

Try the old SteamVR UI
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\config\steamvr.vrsettings
add "allowVRGamepadUI" : false, under the "dashboard section

I don't see a dashboard section anywhere
