Old friend notifications constantly pop up and repeat themselves

Whenever I open SteamVR, I get spammed with notifications for what my friends *were* playing days (if not weeks) ago, and if that wasn't bad enough, they keep repeating myself. One time I got the notification that the same guy was playing Risk of Rain like 5 times in a row.
The notification banner takes up a good portion of my visual space and covers most UIs, and if one pops up right before I click a button it's about to cover, it'll cause my to click it instead and bring me to the Steam friends list, like some ♥♥♥♥♥♥ mobile ad.
This has been happening for months now.
Is there still not a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fix????

Same here. Am pissed off by that. I want go get notifications. But only when they happen, not whole flippin hystory of notifications since last week.

Best fix I've found is you can completely disable notifications in SteamVR's settings
