Quest 3 - USB 3.0 Quest Link issues / Passthrough tap causes crash
Hey all,

Just wondering if other people have been experiencing some weird bugs with the Quest 3, SteamVR, and QuestLink using a cable connection via USB-C 3.0?

Very new to the VR space, but since purchasing a Quest 3 in 2023 I have not had a single issue with connecting it via an original fibre optic QuestLink cable to my PC.

In the last week I've noticed updates from; Meta, SteamVR and NVIDIA graphics drivers, which for some reason have completely broken my ability to connect to my PC. I am trying to troubleshoot which update has caused what, but reading the forums it looks like each service have released somewhat broken updates recently...

Issue 1 - USB C 3.0 now detecting as USB 2.0 in QuestLink app:

From NOV-2023 until last week my PC has always detected the Quest 3 via the QuestLink fibre optic cable as USB 3.0 (it is plugged into a high powered USB 3 port on the MOBO).

The QuestLink app is now flagging a warning icon saying the Quest 3 is plugged into a USB 2.0 port, and to move it to a USB-C 3.0 port for better performance...

I have troubleshooted all my USB drivers and ports, and re-installed multiple drivers but still the Quest app flags the quest as being plugged into an 'underpowered' USB 2 port...

Issue 2 - Quest 3 side tap passthrough causes QuestLink to crash:

When I am actually able to load into QuestLink and view my desktop through the Quest 3, using the double tap pass through gesture causes QuestLink to crash every single time.

The Quest 3 still remains connected to my PC and shows up as an option to re-activate in the headset, but it then just loads and hangs at the white chequered floor screen.

I have been able to get into a SteamVR game a few times, but as soon as you use the double tap passthough gesture it crashes completely. Never had this issue at all until last week with these updates...

Not sure what is going on with the Quest 3 or their recent updates, but I've had quite a painless experience up until now. It just seems there are USB-C connection issues for the basic Quest Link or SteamVR apps.

Anyone else have these issues or can suggest a fix?

The same issue. I'm back to virtual desktop. Have you found a solution yet?

Yes and No,

No = Still showing my Quest 3 as connected via USB 2 in the Meta Quest app, despite it being an original fibre optic cable from Meta, and being in a USB-C 3.0 port...

Yes = SteamVR recently updated with a patch a few days ago, and I have been able to finally connect via RIFT desktop view, get into VR games, and have a semi-solid gaming session.

But, my game just randomly crashed about 2 hours in...which looking at the forums with SteamVR, that was a pretty good gaming session haha. Looks like it was my PC just randomly disconnected the RIFT connection for no reason... Clearly SteamVR has many many issues.

TLDR: SteamVR latest patch appears to have fixed initial connection to RIFT, but randomly crashed later on.

Yes = Quest 3 side tap pass-though appears to have been fixed, and no longer crashes or freezes.

The whole SteamVR app honestly is just trash and poorly optimised, people are complaining of a memory leak ATM...some things fixed, some things broken... I feel this is going to be the norm in the future.

Atleast now my headset connects to my PC... that's a start.

Yes I have the same issue. I reset it factory settings no help. It worked will, until the recent v66 update. Then it said my USB 3 is now a usb 2. Then eventually it doesn’t connect. Only way I can get into DCS world is in airline mode

I cant run Steam VR games with my 3080, 32GB RAM, and 5800x3d and them installed on a NVME drive. I even bought a 6E router, and the problem persists.I have no idea what's happening, but I have a Quest 3 and games just lag to all hell. I keep running into this problem with SteamVR sadly. Native games on my headset I bought off the store run fine. I reinstalled SteamVR and it fixed it yesterday, but the issue came back.
