Good luck.

As for 3D content, we tried a blue-ray player connected to a VR ready desktop and the content is encrypted. Outside the USA, most folks use torrents but it's tough in US to get 3D content, even if you own the blu-ray 3d disc because of encryption bs. However, you can download sample 3d content from sites[www.stereoscopynews.com] like this for free.
Virtual Desktop works fine with the Vive, and has for weeks.
But only once you figure out how it works. The usability is a nightmare.
That's not true at all. You start it and put on your headset. What problem do you have with it?
Are you kidding me? Write down everything that you need to do in order to watch a 3d movie. It is definitely NOT done with starting "it" (what is "it"?) and putting on your headset ... all you end up is with e. g. an SBS movie that you see side-by-side, but definiteyl NOT in 3d.
Then you get a 360 degree 3d movie on a spherical surface, nothing else.
Here's more information about how to watch a 3d movie on a planar surface:

Answer by ggodin:
"Watch your SBS movie in Windows Media player, make it fullscreen, then press F6 or F7. "
Well, who would have guessed, when there's no manual for that most awful user interface.

Maybe "Whirligig" would work as well. But its not too bad to own virtual desktop... now that you can move the mouse with the trackpad at least.
