How to watch a 3d movie?
There are a lot of 3d movies on youtube, e. g. this one has SBS format:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGZ3dtf--Ns

How do you watch something like that in 3d on the HTC Vive? Is there a movie player for that?

Did you try CINEVEO - Virtual Reality Cinema? the description says it can play 3D movies. If not directly from YouTube then you have to download the youtube .mp4 file manually with Firefox Add-ons like "YouTube Video and Audio Downloader"
https://addons.mozilla.org/nl/firefox/addon/youtube-video-and-audio-dow/
Good luck.

VR Desktop does not appear to work with the HTC Vive yet. "Features that are being worked on include support for OpenVR (HTC Vive) and motion controls." It looks like Valve is working on something: http://venturebeat.com/2016/03/12/valve-enables-players-to-play-non-vr-games-on-the-htc-vive/

OK so I am a little confused people have told me before that virtual desktop does work on the vive, but now I am hearing that it doesn't but valve is working on a theater mode which does what virtual desktop does. When I went to virtual desktop it looked like it says it works with the vive but the download part says nothing about the vive only the rift. I guess what I am asking is first can someone please confirm that virtual desktop does in fact work on the vive and second if it doesn't but they are working on it why wouldn't valve or htc work with the people behind virtual desktop so that it does work instead of starting from scratch.

Hi, you can watch 3D movies with Swift and it also converts non-VR games into VR. It's for Oculus and Vive. There are some "Pre" type bugs we are trying to work out--mostly having to reset the lighthouse because Vive does not offer the developer an API to access the lighthouse yet. We use the VLC player to watch 3D movies.

As for 3D content, we tried a blue-ray player connected to a VR ready desktop and the content is encrypted. Outside the USA, most folks use torrents but it's tough in US to get 3D content, even if you own the blu-ray 3d disc because of encryption bs. However, you can download sample 3d content from sites[www.stereoscopynews.com] like this for free.

Virtual Desktop works fine with the Vive, and has for weeks.

But only once you figure out how it works. The usability is a nightmare.

That's not true at all. You start it and put on your headset. What problem do you have with it?

Are you kidding me? Write down everything that you need to do in order to watch a 3d movie. It is definitely NOT done with starting "it" (what is "it"?) and putting on your headset ... all you end up is with e. g. an SBS movie that you see side-by-side, but definiteyl NOT in 3d.

What software are you talking about? I'm talking about the software called "Virtual Desktop" on Steam. To watch a 3D video clip, you launch Virtual Desktop, put on the HMD, go into the video tab, open your video, and select the format type (side-by-side or over-under, 180 or 360). It's not difficult to do at all.

Then you get a 360 degree 3d movie on a spherical surface, nothing else.

Here's more information about how to watch a 3d movie on a planar surface:

Answer by ggodin:

"Watch your SBS movie in Windows Media player, make it fullscreen, then press F6 or F7. "

Well, who would have guessed, when there's no manual for that most awful user interface.

Virtual Desktop does not work playing 3D home made videos. I mean they play but they are way oversized and 360 degrees. I looked in all the settings and you can not just put them in front of you to play and resize them as you would a normal video player. Unless of course I am missing something. Yes I can play 360 HD videos from Youtube but I want to play my own 3D videos without the rap around screen or dome which looks worse. Or if I am stuck with rap around then it is too large and the resolution is horrible and need to adjust the size somehow to be smaller. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

No, it's just that the user interface is the utter crap. Here's how you play a movie in e. g. the movie theater:

"Watch your SBS movie in Windows Media player, make it fullscreen, then press F6 or F7. "

I've been watching Tron Legacy like that. VLC media player, launch the video and either hit F6 or hit that SBS box in the Virtual Deskop app menu.

Maybe "Whirligig" would work as well. But its not too bad to own virtual desktop... now that you can move the mouse with the trackpad at least.
