SteamVR
Compositor not available - HTC Vive Pre
I seem to have gotten everything hooked up correctly - SteamVR shows the headset, controllers and boxes are green. Drivers seem to have loaded and the firmware update went well. However, I get the error that the compositor needs to run in order for SteamVR to work. What is going wrong?

I cannot get video to the HMD, but the little white light shows it is connected.

Also, the Steam Big Picture thing seems to load up on my main computer screen.

I am having this problem as well, error code 400. Clicking the Launch Compositor does nothing that I can tell.
Do you have nvidia? Do you have the very latest drivers?
Some here but with the OSVR, have the latest drivers and latest version of Steam
This message can come up if you plug in the vive hdmi cable to your motherboards socket and not the gpus. Make sure everything is connected to your gpu.
I sometimes get this during development in UE4. Here's my troubleshooting steps:
1. Try to click the "launch compositor" button. Work?
2. Unplug the power source from the HMD and then plug it back in. Work?
3. Shut down the game engine and restart it.
4. Reboot the computer completely
For us, it seems to happen if the Vive is plugged into either;
- the second GPU rather than the primary. Apparently, it can have difficulty seeing the second GPU thus far.
- or the main GPU while no other monitor is present on that same GPU.

Very strange behavior...
The way I solved this involved a couple of changes the past two times I've seen it (different machines, different Vive units), but try this:

Disconnect everything from the break box (all six cables) leave it alone for 5 minutes. Optional: restart your PC while waiting. Then reconnect everything and see if it plays nice.

Can I please have your babies? People have posted 1000 different solutions to this issue and this was the ONE!
I had this issue when I first set mine up, I had 3 monitors plugged in, 1 television and the Vive. When I unplugged one of the monitors, it immediately started working.
hello a question , have you solved the problem as to the Compositor unavailable in htc vive
I had that same problem “compositor not available” My machine has three gtx980tis originally I had my main monitor coming off one card and the vive plugged into a second.
After a lot go head scratching turns out I have to have the vive plugged into the same card as my monitor. Monitor is on the DVI and Vive is on HDMI. Now works a treat.
try go into the 'bin' folder of steamvr, you'll see compositor's .exe file, hold shift and right click on it and choose "launch as administrator"
Hi all, had the same problem but after changing my environment from a user named Wayne Borrett with the environment TEST USE. Steam should ban this user as they did it before!
So I had (luckily) a backup of the file steamvr.vrsettings, deleted the old and replaced and hey presto everything was fine again.
None of these worked. WHAT THE ♥♥♥♥
wait mine is not a graphics card its a video card but there still i have problem with it like when i have all the items working its not saying its ready it just say not ready :( how do i use the vr when i have this problem :(
