SteamVR with Quest 2 (Airlink) problem (non-steam games)
I play VR games using a quest 2 connected to my pc with airlink, it used to work no problem, my routine was:

-connect to pc
-open steamVR
-start a game (even non steam game, random .exe of games demo ecc..)

the game opened inside steamVR no problem, now with the new updates (idk if steamVR or oculus update) the games won't start, i have to add the non-steam game .exe to steam library and most of them still wont launch.
VR games bought on steam work no problem, any idea?

The main problem i've is that most of the VR games i play are mod for other games so most of them have different .exe for starting, other .bat, i have to launch them from the desktop

I don't know that this is the real issue, but a lot of users have reported OpenXR runtime issues, where the runtime gets swapped. You may want to try setting SteamVR to be your OpenXR runtime by opening SteamVR settings via the ≡ button in the top-left of SteamVR on your Desktop. Go under "OpenXR" and select "SET STEAMVR AS OPENXR RUNTIME" for your system. Restart SteamVR and see if that helps.

What games, specifically are you having a hard time with? And could you share some of the contents of the batch files that you are launching with?

i just checked the .bat, it just add a launch option "--vr" to the game .exe, i can add that to steam launch options but i still need to add the game as non-steam game to make it work with steamVR.
Prior to the most recent updates, it was working without being launched through Steam.

Just confirming - does the issue also happen if you start SteamVR and get to the compositor then start the game?

Do you know if this issue is also present when using Steam Link?

yes, what i do is:
-connect to the pc, tried both the new steam link and oculus airlink
-open steam vr
-launch a game

if is a steam game it works no problem
if is a random exe on the desktop it opens but doesnt start on vr

also, if i open the game without opening steam vr first, when the game launches it opens steam vr but it doesnt open on the oculus

A few more questions:

1. What games are you seeing this on? I can't reproduce Beat Saber or Old Friend (OpenXR / OpenVR) apps. I.e. adding --vr, but not launching through Steam.

2. You must be running Steam to use Steam Link, otherwise SteamVR cannot share the session data to the headset.

To clarify, while you don't need to launch through Steam, it does need to be running at the time. Are you not running Steam?

I launch steam VR through steam library, so yes, i've steam running (i use oculus airlink to connect)
When i try to start a game i'm inside steam home
these games that dont work are mainly unity demo (or full game) downloaded from itch

this is they used to work, now they don't, i'm not understand if is a problem i've or some update changed something cause i didn't touch anything apart from updating both the oculus and steam vr

There's a pretty wide multitude of things that could be going on - I would be curious to know if any other combinations work, i.e. Steam Link or Virtual Desktop. There's a lot of strange behavior between the Quest OpenXR runtime and SteamVR we've been noting more recently.

I tried Steam Link and the problem is still there, i don't have virtual desktop tho
Some reviews of virtual desktop (2/3 days ago) say that they had problem with both steam link and air link but everything work with virtual desktop, i don't know what to say

Nope, still to this day no games run. I've to add them as non-steam games and check the "add to vr library" and launch them within the steam vr home.
Most the games i play that are not from steam i get them from dlsite (if you know you know).

This seems to be a problem in general, not only for these games. There is not a single game that works (at least for me) if i don't do that

Have you tried the beta version of the Meta Quest Link App (Oculus PC Software)? (Settings > Beta > Beta Test Channel)

Is “Unknown Sources” enabled in Settings > General? You can try to set Meta Quest Link as the default OpenXR runtime (Settings > General).

steamvr doesnt work without the "Unknown Sources" so you need it on. I tried chaning the default vr runtime with both steam and openxr, nether works.

You don't have any problem? You connect your headset to the pc, start an app and the app starts steamvr and everything works?
