How do I disable SteamVR desktop game theater now?
I don't wanna play Flat games in VR ever, the global setting is missing and the game by game setting is missing, I'm on steam VR non-beta

please i need it gone
Alright, I got... creative. What follows is a step-by-step process that is far too many steps, and this still needs to be fixed- but if you use an alternate direct-to-desktop stream program, this should solve your problem.

1) Go into Steam's folder. If you're a modder, you should be familiar with this, but if you aren't it should be at C:\Program Files (x86)

2) Open the Steam folder
a)steamapps (all one word)
b)common
c)SteamVR
d)tools
e)steamvr_desktop_game_theater
f)win64

3) Select the folder labeled steamvr_desktop_game_theater_Data

4)Move the folder to somewhere unimportant (mine now lives in the 3D Objects folder windows gave me). I HIGHLY recommend you do NOT delete it, but that is (theoretically) an option.

5) Start your game
a) Steam will try to start the theater, and fail as the folder has been removed.
b) Alt-tab out of the game, and start your streaming program
c) Play the game.

I don't know that this will work for flat-to-vr programs (I don't think it will) but it should be more robust if you want an alternate method for desktop streaming to a headset.

Alternatively, you can just opt into the SteamVR beta, since it is no longer being used.

I can't use my vr anymore, at all. a window pops up in vr, which needs controllers to interact with.. i don't ever use controllers. I tried deleting folder mentioned, nothing changed. i tried turning it off in setting, nothing changed. i tried opt into beta, nothing changed.

This thing is more persistent than a virus at this point, making me unable to do what i want to do.

Why push a update which makes it completely useless for users who don't use you app in the one specific way that you wanted??

The issue Silverino mentions is a separate problem where the dashboard constantly opens anytime you launch a VR game, no button on a gamepad can close it making VR unusable for people without VR controllers. I was gonna report that at some point.

but does this not mean that this will eventually be in the main steamvr application? So when it does go main, how do we disable it then?

What kind of headset do you have?

I was referring to these instructions:

steamvr_desktop_game_theater is the old legacy app used to display 2D games in VR. That app is no longer used in the current SteamVR beta. When beta flips to main / default for all users, then it will also no longer be used there.

So has anyone solved this? I was trying to play some of my pancake games in bigscreen vr but every time I try to load them it closes bigscreen and just loads up in the steam theatre and not all games even work correctly in it, so would much rather disable it but cant find the option anywhere in new UIs.

The beta has worked for me, but I use Virtual Desktop so YMMV.

The vr ini file (tools.vrmanifest) in steamvr can be messed with if you don't want to opt into the beta, lmk if that's the route you want to go. It's pretty involved and can break if you aren't familiar with batch/powershell/basic coding.

I tried launching in Virtual Desktop,( to launch 2d games ) and it just loads the new steam theatre mode.
