1) Go into Steam's folder. If you're a modder, you should be familiar with this, but if you aren't it should be at C:\Program Files (x86)
2) Open the Steam folder
a)steamapps (all one word)
b)common
c)SteamVR
d)tools
e)steamvr_desktop_game_theater
f)win64
3) Select the folder labeled steamvr_desktop_game_theater_Data
4)Move the folder to somewhere unimportant (mine now lives in the 3D Objects folder windows gave me). I HIGHLY recommend you do NOT delete it, but that is (theoretically) an option.
5) Start your game
a) Steam will try to start the theater, and fail as the folder has been removed.
b) Alt-tab out of the game, and start your streaming program
c) Play the game.
I don't know that this will work for flat-to-vr programs (I don't think it will) but it should be more robust if you want an alternate method for desktop streaming to a headset.
I can't use my vr anymore, at all. a window pops up in vr, which needs controllers to interact with.. i don't ever use controllers. I tried deleting folder mentioned, nothing changed. i tried turning it off in setting, nothing changed. i tried opt into beta, nothing changed.
This thing is more persistent than a virus at this point, making me unable to do what i want to do.
Why push a update which makes it completely useless for users who don't use you app in the one specific way that you wanted??
steamvr_desktop_game_theater is the old legacy app used to display 2D games in VR. That app is no longer used in the current SteamVR beta. When beta flips to main / default for all users, then it will also no longer be used there.
The beta has worked for me, but I use Virtual Desktop so YMMV.
The vr ini file (tools.vrmanifest) in steamvr can be messed with if you don't want to opt into the beta, lmk if that's the route you want to go. It's pretty involved and can break if you aren't familiar with batch/powershell/basic coding.
