Question as a new VR user
Is it normal for a PC, which is normally very quiet to become louder when playing vr?

I7 - 12700K
RTX 3080
16GB RAM

I'm just concerned ill damage my PC by doing this.

Appreciate you guy's input :)

Yes, because using VR you put a heavy load on the GPU and CPU, which leads to maximum fan speeds. If by "louder" you mean the sound of the fans.

But If you hear whistles and strange sounds, then in this case the quality of the elements of your video card or power supply or MB is in question.

The fans will be at maximum speed very often, the GPU renders at the maximum possible performance in most cases. If your PC gets overheated, it will stop and crash to avoid permanent damage, don't worry. Maybe their fans are just too loud or something is loose. As a rule, I always use 2 fans for intake and 1 for the outtake at lest, that way the dust always is filtered by the filter and it will be cool and quiet, If you use a laptop, then the fans are ridiculous and noise, try to let the laptop on a well-ventilated place (never over soft fabric for example). When buying a fan, look the size, the running hours, the sound at maximum speed and the number of wires it uses (something good would be something like this: XXX mm/125.000 h/23,5 dbA/4pin).

It's normal for the fans to spin up when temperatures increase, which they do under load.

You can monitor your CPU/GPU/Motherboard temperatures with HWMonitor to make sure everything is fine.

What I can recommend you to do is to go to your nvidia drivers and set the MAX FRAME RATE to the exact value of your VR headset. For example if you use 90 fps headset, set the max frame rate to that exact value.

If you do not set a max frame rate value your video card is probably working without any constrain and try to render as much frames as possible and this creates additional GPU/CPU overload that your computer is trying to keep up.....so putting a max frame rate makes everything works perfectly for your headset and you will have extra power to use on other things that will improve and make the entire experience butter sweet fluid :)

Enjoy VR

it is an amazing experience
