HTC Vive Error 208
I keep getting an error 208 (monitor not detected) but I have tried everything suggested in the troubleshooting and forums that I could find and still no luck. When I try to switch to direct mode as suggested, nothing seems to happen and Steam VR doesn't restart (which it is supposed to do). This is extremely frustrating. If anybody has found a solution or has any other suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

I have to assume its because of my newer VR READY! laptop with the NVidia 1070 in it. The primary monitor is the LCD and I'm running the vive out of the HDMI out. Would not being the "primary" display be the problem?

Did you install latest Nvidia driver 372.54? I have 1070 too but it worked okay.

Hi, i fought for some hours with that 208 error too, and tried everything i have seen, until i noticed that my graphic card had a small edge (kind of step), slightly above the HDMI connector, and the plastic arround the metal part of the cable connector was leaning against this kind of step, so connector in fact was not 100% inside the graphic card (although it really seemed properly connected by the way)

Once i cut out some 2 mm of that plastic, and could finally fit the connector properly, problem solved..... It was just that.

Got this error everytime I turn on my computer and this is related to USBs , DO NOT waste your time in plug and unplug cables (Bullsh**).

How to fix it :
Previously : Download USBDeview and do not turn on Steam.
Load UsbDeview
Disconnect all cables from LinkBox
Go to UsbDeview and Order list by Connected
Uninstall all Usbs not connected (not green)
Connect in this order cables from CPU to LinkBox ( HDMI - USB - Power)
Wait until recognized
Connect in this order cables from HDM Vive to LinkBox ( HDMI - USB - Power)
Wait until recognized
Open Steam as Administrator
Execute Steam VR
Done.

I had the Same issue I ran windows trouble shooter for the device and it fix it. Apparently it is an issue with the Vive initializing in a different state then the program thinks it's in. Hopefully that will be on some help. :)

This worked for me:

First jank out the power to the link box completely, then start up SteamVR. It will give you the error 108 instead of 208. The 108 is just "Headset not detected", which is obvious when the link box isn't even plugged in. While the 108 error is displaying, plug the link box in. It just worked immediately after that for me.

To clarify, all of the cables to the link box were properly inserted except for the power adapter not being plugged into the link box until after the 108 error came up.

This worked for me, minus opening Steam as an Administrator. I didn't bother, and everything worked.

A bit of necromancy here...

I had this problem on one of my computers and I fixed it by following Gulligan's advice above. Just today it cropped up on a second computer, and absolutely NOTHING will fix it. I have traded out every piece of hardware including headsets, link boxes and cables. I have even formatted my drives and reinstalled Windows THREE times. The only thing I haven't tried is getting a Displayport to Mini Displayport cable. Outrageously frustrating.

I had this problem. I solved it making sure the wires of the headset were correctly connected. You can use a pen cap or some plastic to push the hdmi connector in case you don't want to open your headset entirely.

Like I said, I not only reconnected the cables, I swapped out different cables, headsets and link boxes. It's definitely not the connection. I think it's possible that the HDMI port on that GPU is not outputting enough of a signal for the HDCP on the Vive.

Just to update in case anyone else has this issue and none of the most common solutions work: the mini Displayport to Displayport cable did the trick. So as I thought, there must be something up with the HDMI port of the GPU.

I plugged a HDMI cable directly from the GPU into the headset and it worked so the HDMI part of the 3-in1 cable is damaged so I have ordered a 5m replacement HDMI cable and I will just zip tie it to it

So I finally got mine to start working properly. All I had to do was Uninstall viveport. Also make sure that all of your steamvr files are located in your c drive. Hope this helps.
