Underground/outside play area
Hello I am completely lost at this point. I received my vive Tuesday set everything up and have not been able to escape this problem. Things I have tried;
Reorienting the lighthouses (many times)

Reinstalling steam/steamvr/vive drivers/gpu drivers/opting into steamvr beta

Placing controllers upside down during floor calibration.

Having hmd on head when calibrating.

Sync cable and lighthouses set to "a" and "b"

Smaller play area/ no reflective surfaces

Things to note prior to this problem I had originally set up my lighthouses with one towards the ground and one near the ceiling, opposite sides of the room. When I place one back to the floor it puts me above ground, still outside the playing area, and also with huge tracking loss. Also before setting up the vive I upgraded my gpu a couple months ago from a gtx 960 to a r9 390 not sure if that has something to do with it maybe old drivers or files from the dk2 as well?

Anyway I read somewhere that it's possible the lighthouses had originally set a bad play zone and it reverts to that one when trying to set up a new play area so maybe there's a way to delete the config for them that someone knows? Any help or solutions to this madness would be appreciated thank you!

It's not totally clear what your problem is because you jump ahead to thing that didn't work.
Too small of area, not aligned to actual room?

>I had originally set up my lighthouses with one towards the ground and one near the ceiling, opposite sides of the room.

Not sure why you configured it that way. I would start with the instructions first where they recommend both lighthouses 6.5' up in opposite corners, facing each other,
then tilted down 30-45 degrees, No more than 15' apart. Keep the lighthouse roll level if at all possible.

Did you try b and c settings w/o cable for the lighthouses?

When you layout the room (using the controller to outline your area) did that match your area?
Check out some of the advanced option (button) in that dialog so you can re-arrange.

The problem is after completing the room set up and being sent to the tutorial it places me 6' under ground and about 4' away from the orange square play area.

Don't know why I places one towards the floor either honestly, must've been to excited to think of the proper alignment. Yes the room is more than big enough up to 3x3m but typically I have been trying 2x2.

Yes it matches up. When I am looking at the room set up it shows me the two base station outside my grid, with my controllers/hmd on the inside. I didn't list everything I have tried.

And yes I've tried b c wireless. As well as swapping b to c and vice versa.

I had the exact same issue you are describing when I set my Vive up the first time. Here's what I was doing wrong...

both lighthouses need to be up high, 6-7feet should be enough, and no more than 15feet apart.

they should set themselves to b and c, but there's a channel-select button on the back if they need help.

both lighthouses need to be able to see the controllers when they are on the floor (my first setup had a loveseat obscuring one lighthouse from floor level).

and my biggest problem (ashamed to admit it), I somehow missed the big ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ 'calibrate' button on the setup screen. It told me to put the controllers on the floor, check. click next to start calibration, check. oh look, another 'next' button, I'll click that one, too. :/

anyway, hope my public shame helps resolve your issue! :)

I have this issue as well. I've tried everything mentioned here, nothing works. I'm still below the orange area and off to the side every single time.

When you did the calibrate floor part, after hitting calibrate are you saying there was another button to hit after it fills the progress meter ? Am I not waiting long enough it only takes about 3 seconds for it.

Nothing is obscuring the view I have a futon to the side but it's not in the bounds of the lighthouses. They are also placed high enough and not to far apart. Did you happen to have multiple hdd? I found out I had steamvr on my c: drive while all my steam library files and app data was on a seperate drive. Moving everything to d: drive did not resolve the issue. Halp

I have the exact same problem.
All firmware is updated (only had to do the controllers). Everything is tracked just fine;
- tracing the area.
- position of HMD and controllers afterwards on the top-down/map view.
- position of controllers when putting on the HMD.
But I'm simply offset into the ground and the orange area is slightly rotated (vertical axis) and off to the side of my actual area.

I've pointed away from my monitor (it's a bit away anyway). I've put the controllers upsidedown when calibrating floor, and up and downside.

It's working for me now. I did several things. None specifically make sense so I'll just list them all;
- Place the base stations closer together and tilt them down further. They were perhaps just outside the 5 meter range. Tracking itself was no issue though.
- Install the Vive software: https://www.htcvive.com/us/setup/
- When tracking your play area the previous times I went counterclockwise. This time I went clockwise. For now I don't dare try counterclockwise again because things are somewhat working now. Maybe tomorrow.

It's funny that for the tutorial you're told to plugin the earbuds, even when by default my soundcard is the sound device. It's a shame that Steam VR doesn't detect the switching of the default device. Though there's settings that supposedly can switch sound devices on startup and closing. If that would save...

Good luck!

I experienced the same issue for the first time today after not having run into it for a week, I noticed that the origin (centre of the play space) had moved to one of my lighthouses. I guess I was just lucky restarting SteamVR fixed it for me. Because of the randomless of the issue and the fact the origin perfectly lined up with my lighthouse I would assume its a software issue - SteamVR does seem a bit buggy from time to time, feels a bit like a beta that needs the edges polished still.

Thanks you or the replies. I shall try moving the houses again and trace the area in the opposite direction when I am home.
Doc May 12, 2016 @ 6:14am
Measured the distance between lighthouses they were nearly 15', they were at 14' 8" adjusted them and set around 13'. Problem was not solved also try manual sync cord as well. I am closer to the floor at head level, I'd still have to jump up to see anything but it still seems my play area is centered in either of my light houses depending on orientation. Don't really have anything closer to mount them with might look for tripods at this point.
