QUICK SOLUTION IN PLAIN ENGLISH: You need to left click in the VR display to "activate" the VR window in it and it will go from red to showing the VR game. Just move your mouse to the VR display (your displays are in extended mode aren't they!) and click the left mouse button anywhere in the VR display.
LONG SOLUTION:
Right click on your desktop and choose "screen resolution" to find where your second display is located relative to the main display. My VR device display was on the right. Yours should also be on the right, but in some cases it will be on the left depending on your setup. Now enter VR, start up the game, whatever, till you get the compositor warning or the RED SCREEN OF DEATH. Then grab your mouse and slide the cursor over to whichever side your display was on so it is off your main screen and on the VR screen and left click once (you might not be able to see the cursor once it's off your main screen so just hope). This activates the VR window.
Leave thanks if it helped!
I rolled back my Nvidia driver and everything was fixed.
The errors I had where:
Compositor not full screen,
Clicking the link in steamVR to make it full screen did nothing,
Not being able to enable direct mode,
And one that no one here has mentioned was a Windows error that said "Can't find name of intel icd openGL driver"
I hope this helps.
