headset prints only green. why? How to I do?

A bit of necrobumping, but google led me to this topic without any replies as one of the top results (thanks, google, very helpful), so I'll share what I understand here.
In my case, green screen meant SteamVR doesn't like current monitor configuration. It may come in many forms: no monitor (user logged off while SteamVR is still working in a background), several monitors (apparently, SteamVR doesn't like multimonitor systems); some people solved this by connecting their only monitor to another port on GPU. In my case, SteamVR also doesn't work when using RDP (Windows Remote Desktop Protocol).
