SteamVR

Vive flickering black screen
My Vive started flickering black and vertical line, it's unplayable. I have hard reset the headset, rolled back drivers, updated firmware, unplugged all connections and plugged into different ports, replaced 3 in 1 cable, checked all ports on hmd, unplugged base stations, ran room set up... Can't figure it out and im itching to play. It;s been 3 days and 6+ hours of work tyring to get it working. The only thing i have not tried that i can think of is reinstalling steam vr, which i have done in the past for fixes and it did not fix. I had to reinstall all of my games, twice... All lights on steam VR menu are green, and tracking. The headset starts to flicker and turn green to red to green on the led... 980ti, i4 - CPU performance and temps are normal... I just want to shoot people in Pavlov VR... please help..

This could be a failing GPU. Can you test the Vive on a different pc, or test a different graphics card in your pc?

Thanks Alien. I can not test the Vive on another PC or swap cards unless I buy one unfortunately..... I have not witnessed any GPU issues on my monitor... I was messing with the power in the house the day prior (replacing breakers) and I think ligthning struck my house the other week, cause I lost a dehumidifier, RIP Dehumid. Everything in my VR station is connected to surge protectors though.., other than the base stations... Base stations say all go, and there is no issue tracking me around the room. The HMD just cuts in and out... then it tricks me and its good for like 10-15 seconds... then.. flicker.. 3 - 5 seconds of black screen.

Having hardware to swap would definetly help determine th issue at hand.. I understand

You could try bypassing the breakout box...... for the HMD's HDMI cable, just plug the HDMI cable direct into the graphics card of the pc....... to see if the breakout box is the problem or not.

Maybe also run a benchmark.... like Unigen Heaven, to stress the graphics card (without the Vive running, just to test the graphics card and see if it is displaying correctly under heavy load).

wow, that name, Unigen Heaven is powerful

Utilization... 99%.. is that not good?

Thats good..... no sign of flickering when the test was running? If not then your Video Card looks good.

Hi dude, I've the same problem. I've a problem with the HDMI port (GPU), so I connect it with the DP and flickering black screen. It's been a while since the game started. Which port do you use? HDMI? DP?
NuggDemolisher Sep 18, 2017 @ 3:39pm
I use the mini DP

Alien - No sign on flickering while UH was running.

That means a failing Video Card is NOT likely, so the problem is not yet found. Did you try plugging the HMD's HDMI cable into the Video Card directly...... ie: Bypassing the Breakout Box? That will show if the problem is/not related to the Breakout Box.
