Adding a 3rd Lighthouse / Base Station for Racing Setup?
Hello,
i want to play racing games in VR with my steering wheel but im not sure if this is possible with my setup, if i would add another lighthouse 2.0 to my index setup.
My usual VR-Room is next to the room my PC is located at. Due to this, there is no direct sight from the wall-mounted lighthouses to my headset if im sitting behind my racing wheel.
Is it possible to add a 3rd base-station in front of me (behind my display and steering wheel) and will this be enough coverage to play racing games without loosing tracking on my headset? anyone having experience with this?
Im not sure if all the lighthouses have to see each other.

Thank you in advance!

Best regards
Robert

The lighthouses need at least to have a glimpse of each other to sync their sweeps each other within the laser's FOV and for calibration. The base station would also need to be visible to the headset. Not sure why you'd wanna put it behind your monitor.

Hey,
thank you for the answers so far!
With "behind the monitor" i meant more like "The wall behind my monitors" but of course above the monitors on the wall.

I've created a little sketch to show you my setup a bit better.
Maybe you can have a look?

The potential 3rd base station wouldn't see the other two in the room next to my desk.

Since it should work with a single base station in theory, i could just let *1 & *2 without power while using the 3rd with my steering wheel?

Maybe i've just answered it myself. :D

So the question left is: is a single base station enough coverage for my HMD for racing games (so the head movement is left and right only)?

Thanks :D

I had a look at your screenshot. I would say that it's probably more ideal to emulate a very large playspace and putting the third base station on the top left corner. The base station doesn't need to "directly" be visible to the other base stations. Even the slightest corner of it should be sufficient. The headset would run fine with a single base station as long as they're constantly in view. The bigger problem is that if you try to isolate the base stations you'd have to run room set up each time when you switch between rooms. However if you want, you can try this solution out that I found which utilises OVR advanced and allows you to do precisely what you want with your planned position that doesn't require the third base station to be within view at all.

Edit: I might be wrong and you don't need to re-run room set-up. I'm not sure if the response is similar in the way that SteamVR doesn't automatically detect the third base station via Bluetooth. If that's the case you could simply power off whichever rooms base stations that you don't want.

Yes.
But don't put it too close. I had some trouble when a base station was within 1 meter (but that was with Lighthouse version 1.)

Thank you both for the time you took to help me, the input really helped!

I think i will try this and will put the 3rd Base-Station in the top left corner of the left room. This way i have coverage of *3 from the left and *2 should be able to peek between the two (i call them:) "half walls" in the middle and grant coverage from the right.
With different chaperone profiles, one as "racing" one as "roomscale" via OVR. Awesome.
