I can't disagree with Cheezus more! For me, the only appeal of the Index is comfort. Supposedly, it is unmatched in "comfort out of the box". ALL of the other headsets require some kind of comfort mods. Usually just a different, aftermarket face pad but some require more. For my Pimax, because I have a narrow "western" face, I need a thick face pad. Also, since the Pimax audio solution has only recently been finished, I have also been using the DAS. I've used a DAS on several different brands of headset (I've got 5 or 6 of them), so I don't think anything of it. Since they upgraded the audio, you probably won't need one for a Pimax anymore: whether you need a different facepad will depend on the shape of your face.
However, imho, the "out of the box" comfort is the ONLY selling point of the Index! The Pimax lineup is the "cutting edge" of VR. It is the ONLY headset with the wide fov (I use the middle setting as I just need the fov to go to the edges of my glasses, anything else is overkill and uses more computer resources), it has a higher fov than any of the others AND it is the only headset that allows you to set -are you ready for this? brightness, contrast, color levels, back light levels, horizontal ipd and vertical fov PER EYE! No other headset allows this level of customization. Of course, having this level of customization throws a lot of people: they don't want to adjust anything, they just want things perfect "out of the box". If that's you, then don't bother with the Pimax series. If you don't mind some tweaking to get the best out of your headset, then go with the Pimax, you get a vastly superior fov as well!
Yes, the Index has gotten cheaper as it gets older and long in the tooth, but you pay for what you get. The Pimax lineup uses the Valve tracking system so once you've got the light houses, you can use any number of the headsets out there. In addition, you have basically "future proofed" your VR setup as you WILL need those light houses later, as the tech improves again.
Not to mention that Pimax is talking about allowing people to use their Pimax headsets as trade-in value for the 12k due out next year. (Anyone who says it's due out this year, doesn't know Pimax very well)
So, personally, for me, it's emphatically the 8kX over the Index every time!!
One note: If your ipd is under 61, you might want to go with a different headset: the Pimax has trouble with the lower values.
it is extremely bulky and cheaply made. most people only use them for seated VR like sim racing/flying. no option for wireless either.
while you can use them with steamvr base stations, they aren't officially supported by valve or htc. an update to steamvr or the base stations could break things and require an update from pimax.
the bigger FOV is pointless; it's extremely blurry at the edge anyway. all a gimmick. pimax is also a "binocular" just like any other headset because it would be extremely uncomfortable on your face otherwise and that's just how the eyes work. not even sure what that guy means. he might be talking about stereo overlap which is more dependent your eyes/facial physical features and not the HMD.
all of the settings the guy listed above can also be changed on most other HMDs. there is no such thing as IPD 'per eye'. he doesn't even know what he's talking about nor can he use paragraphs.
he mentions glasses which made me laugh. you can't even get prescription lenses for the pimax. wearing glasses in VR is absolute hell. any other headset you can order rx lenses from vroptician and be much better off. made the experience 1000x better.
you will also be completely screwed if you need any type of support. you can go read about that yourself. they barely speak english and an RMA will take 6 months.
no, it's not worth it. you are also in another price bracket, as you could almost get 3 index for the price of 1 8kx. the pimax is for people who do things because they can, not because they should.
i also can't stand how pimax is 'always on sale' like some cheap product on dhgate or alibaba. just their whole presentation and brand screams cheap and tacky.
get the vive pro 2 with a wireless adapter, index knuckles and some vive trackers to play around with. thank me later.
