I already said that about the single DP but you obviously didn't read what I said. 8k is only referring to horizontal resolution in Pimax case. In every other situation 8k is in reference to 7680x4320. It is an exact term just like 4K is. If you went to the store and purchased a 4K TV and got it home only to find that it was only 1080 vertical pixels, you would be mad and there would probably be a massive lawsuit. But when a TV manufacture says 4K, you know they mean 3840x2160. You can argue all you want but I am correct and far more an expert than you on the subject.
Besides I already said I don't specifically care an would love to have one. What I don't like is how Pimax is advertising. Vive and rift were straight forward about their resolutions and capabilities.
I also have an ultrawide monitor. I don't call it a 4K screen because it's only 1440 vertical. I also have a 4K native projector on 135" elitescreen. I do call it 4K.
Edit: please cite source for upscaled resolution. Even on Pimax own website it states a resolution of 4K upscaled to 8k. The original was using HDMI but they could have changed to DP for greater bandwidth (have to go read about it first).
That is not quite 100% The headset will take whatever resolution the GPU and game are sending it. It does not have to take 2x 1440p renders from the gpu. According to the developers it will accept 1080p or even lower from your GPU. So therefor the GPU can work as easily with the Pimax as it does with Vive/Rift setups.
Finished for you
It's just like a monitor with resolution scaler.
I'm not running all games at 4k on my monitor and same can apply to a VR headset.
But however, I think with the normal Pimax 8k you cant drive any higher than 2x1440p. I think...
Thats what the Pimax 8K X is for. (Which is too much for nowadays GPUs)
Thank you for wrapping that up for me :). Yes the Pimiax 8k can only use a signal up to 1440p and uscales that. This is a limitation of the single DisplayPort cables bandwidth. The 8K-X uses two display port cables to get around this and a different driver board internally. Personally I feel it will be years before I outgrow the 8K so I will wait for future products to worry about Driving anything higher res. Remember though that even the 1440P x 2 input to the normal 8x is upscaled and you get that lovely higher pixel density. Very excited. I am backer #1200 on the list
I had to order and create a visa credit card just for this.
I hope they will be shipping mine soon enough. :-)
To everybody..
If you have a Vive now.. you may consider upgrading to a Pimax 8K headset and keep the base stations and controllers. This is actually super cool.
I will be enjoying SteamVR destinations a lot more without the sceeendoor and increased FOV... I'd almost pay double to have it right now. Lol
Cheap trackers? Same....
And I think after over 1000 posts everywhere we are perfectly aware about the displays. Their own website and kickstarter explain what it is. So what you are saying is useless.
Rift, Vive and Microsoft MR can be burried down in 2018 by enthusiasts, because Pimax does it better.
The only thing thats really cheap and useless are the comtrollers.
But I will be using the Vive controllers.
I am going to wait untill June/July 2018, and see what the market has to offer. If the Pimax 8K is better than anything else on the market then I will buy it. But I will be watching the reviews for early Pimax 8K models, expected from December 2017 onwards.
But Pimax 8k X (real 2x 4k) comes later. However the 8k X is going to be useless to the consumer without eye tracking.
/edit... or without a finally decent CFX/SLI support. (But multi graphics cards is a niche)
this is all i want
everybody else is going to play catch up... they got it right with their 4k headset from the start and keep improving on it with 5k and 8k variants coming out next year.
