SteamVR

Possible to run SteamVR in offline mode?
I've viewed posts stating that this is possible, but it doesn't work using my Oculus Rift S.

While SteamVR will technically launch when Steam is offline, it doesn't see the hand controllers correctly (sometimes seeing only one, other times putting them both in the wrong place and/or immobile) plus it's insanely, dizzyingly laggy when offline.

I live in a place with slow and spotty internet, and I can always tell when my internet stumbles or disconnects because my SteamVR goes from showing green/ small latency numbers (like 2-12) to orange or red/ high numbers (30-200).

If I launch Steam in offline mode and then try to launch SteamVR, it will technically launch, but the above occurs.

If I launch both Steam and SteamVR in online mode, then manually switch off my wi-fi, I get a popup window telling me that I need to click here to try to reconnect (with no other options given).

Not sure what else to try.

I see Google search results for a program called DMS that can be downloaded for this purpose, but I can't locate it or else it no longer exists.

To rephrase my original question: How do I tell SteamVR that I want to play without access to internet, and launch it so that it actually works? Or is this even possible?

(And yes, I already know how to run Steam in offline mode and do it all the time; that's not what I'm asking about.) :-)

Thanks!

Dont think you can try much. SteamVR does work in offline mode with my Index just fine
but I always assumed it wouldn't work with Oculus headsets because SteamVR relies on wrapping around the Oculus SDK which needs to be online.

In short, it's not about SteamVR supporting Offline functionality but rather the hardware you use with it.

I might be wrong of course but that seemed to be the case with my limited use of Oculus hardware.

No, the Oculus SDK doesn't need to be online. I have mine blocked in my windows host file, so it stops it accessing the net and updating to a version that just makes you want to smash your headset, so I keep it on a older version. Obviously, you can't then access the Oculus store, or Oculus home, but that is a tiny price to pay to have a stable system.

Thanks very much for your input. I have no need for the Oculus store, so I guess my next question is: How do I stop it from loading? It does so automatically when I launch SteamVR, and I've been through all the Oculus menu options (setup, etc.) dozens of times and see no obvious way of disabling it.

In your Windows host file in Windows/System32/Drivers/Etc

Add these lines to your host file

127.0.0.1 securecdn.oculus.com
127.0.0.1 www.securecdn.oculus.com
127.0.0.1 www.oculus.com
127.0.0.1 edge-oculus-shv-01-lht6.fbcdn.net
127.0.0.1 edge-mqtt-shv-01-lht6.facebook.com

The Oculus drivers will still load, but not connect to the internet, so you can still play Steam offline. You will lose Oculus Home, Oculus store, and sometimes you can lose your Guardian setup, although this is mostly a random thing. The real stubborn SteamVR games can be offline by logging into Steam once, running the game, then going offline.

Thanks! I'll give it a try.
